Coder Trainee information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Coder Trainee, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Coder Trainee, you need a basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and coding systems such as ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT, typically supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with healthcare coding software, electronic health records (EHR) systems, and pursuing certification like Certified Coding Associate (CCA) is advantageous. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate coding, minimize billing errors, and support efficient healthcare reimbursement processes.

What kinds of projects and tasks can a Coder Trainee expect to work on during their initial months?

As a Coder Trainee, you will typically start with basic programming assignments such as debugging existing code, writing simple scripts, and assisting with testing and documentation. You'll often work closely with senior developers and participate in team meetings to understand project requirements and workflows. Trainees are usually given opportunities to shadow experienced coders, contribute to collaborative projects, and gradually take on more complex coding tasks as their skills develop. This hands-on approach helps build a strong foundation and prepares you for more advanced responsibilities within the team.

What are coder trainees?

Coder trainees are individuals who are in the process of learning how to write, test, and maintain computer code under supervision. They typically work under experienced programmers or as part of a training program to develop their skills in various programming languages and software development practices. Coder trainees often participate in coding bootcamps, internships, or entry-level positions to gain practical experience. Their goal is to build a strong foundation in coding so they can progress to more advanced developer roles.

Job description

The Board-Certified Behavior Analyst designs, implements, and oversees individualized ABA programs for assigned clients. The BCBA conducts functional behavior assessments, develops behavior intervention plans, supervises RBTs and BCaBAs, and ensures clinical and billing documentation integrity across all assigned cases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct functional behavior assessments (FBA) and skills assessments for assigned clients using validated, evidence-based tools
  • Design individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and skill acquisition programs grounded in applied behavior analysis and BACB standards
  • Provide direct and indirect supervision to RBTs on the assigned caseload — minimum 5% of each RBT's monthly direct service hours with at least one individual client observation per month
  • Review and analyze session data on a minimum bi-weekly basis; modify programs based on data using pre-established decision rules
  • Complete all clinical documentation — treatment plans, reevaluations, supervision notes, and session notes for BCBA-delivered services — in the Rethink EMR within required timelines
  • Ensure all documentation is accurate, objective, and consistent with services billed to SoonerCare or other payers
  • Facilitate caregiver training and family involvement in behavioral programming
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, IEP meetings, and school coordination as applicable
  • Obtain and maintain all required prior authorizations for assigned caseload, coordinate renewal timelines with the Authorization Coordinator
  • Comply with the BACB Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts (2020) at all times
  • Maintain BCBA certification through required continuing education (32 CEUs per 2-year cycle including ethics hours)
  • Master's degree or higher in behavior analysis, psychology, education, or related field
  • Current, active BCBA certification in good standing with the BACB
  • Current, active Oklahoma OLBAB license
  • Completion of BACB 8-hour Supervision Training (STC 2.0) required prior to supervising RBTs or trainees
  • No active disciplinary sanctions on BACB certification or OLBAB license
  • Experience working with children and adolescents with autism, developmental disabilities, or related conditions
  • Proficiency with Rethink EMR or comparable ABA data collection and documentation systems preferred
  • Clearance of all required background checks and OIG/SAM.gov exclusion screens
