Job description

Description BRIEF DESCRIPTION: While in the Deputy Trainee status, the employee participates and engages in a formal, full-time Law Enforcement Academy and in-house training and assigned work activities specifically designed and chosen to train and indoctrinate the individual in the field of law enforcement. Work is performed under the immediate, daily supervision and guidance of a higher-level officer and/or academy instructor. The position reports to the MCSO Training Division Commander.

Examples of Duties DUTIES: A. Abide by the "Law Enforcement Code of Ethics". B.

Abide by the MCSO Code of Conduct, all Operations Directives and all local, state and federal laws. C. Maintain a passing grade with coursework, student deliverables and physical fitness requirements during the Law Enforcement Academy.

D. Maintain an alert and business-like and professional manner, and a military bearing in the classroom, during field training and when in the community at all times. E.

Perform other related duties, as assigned, including modified schedule or temporary re-assignment during declared emergency or activations, as determined by the Sheriff. Typical Qualifications JOB PREREQUISITES: A. High School diploma or GED.

B. Proficient in reading, writing and speaking English. C.

Must be a minimum of 19 years of age. D. Ability to be cleared to register as a student at the College of Central Florida or an approved CJSTC approved certified training center within the state of Florida.

This clearance is from all financial obligations (debts) with any regionally accredited U.S. college, university or school of higher learning (beyond High School) as determined by the College of Central Florida. E

Successfully complete the MCSO competitive selection process for the position including medical physical, drug screening and psychological assessments. F. Ability to maintain the physical condition needed to perform the essential functions of a full-time law enforcement academy recruit.

G. Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License, with a good driving record. H.

Be able to effectively communicate information both orally and in writing. I. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with academy instructors, faculty and fellow students.

J. Ability to demonstrate excellent teamwork skills. K.

Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine a proper course of action. L. Ability to react quickly and calmly under emergency situations.

M. Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously and tactfully, with respect to rights of others. N.

Ability to develop skill in use and care of firearms O. Ability to develop excellent emergency vehicle operations skills. P.

Ability to maintain good physical and mental conditions and a positive, professional demeanor. Supplemental Information JOB REQUIREMENTS: A. Maintain a valid Florida driver's license.

B. Successfully perform duties as a full-time student in a Basic Police Recruit School in the State of Florida. C.

Maintain an alert and business-like and professional manner, dress and a military bearing in the classroom, during field training and when in the community at all times. D. Maintain a satisfactory performance demonstrated by a passing grade average for the academy, on student deliverables and by meeting physical fitness requirements during the Law Enforcement Academy.

E. Within 30 days of successful graduation from the LEO Academy, take and pass the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) examination for Certified Law Enforcement Officers. F.

Required to make a 3-year employment commitment to Marion County Sheriff's Office at the time of selection as a Deputy Trainee. This commitment period will begin on the date the Deputy Trainee/Patrol Deputy I is successfully released following the MCSO Patrol Deputy Field Training Program.
