What is a Co Op Drone Engineer?

Co Op Drone Engineers are students or early-career professionals who work in a cooperative (co-op) education program, gaining hands-on experience in designing, building, testing, and operating drones. They typically work alongside experienced engineers to support drone development projects, perform data analysis, and assist with flight operations. This role allows them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges in areas such as aerospace, robotics, and software engineering. Co Op Drone Engineers often participate in internships as part of their degree program, helping them build valuable skills and industry connections.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Co Op Drone Engineer expect during their placement?

As a Co Op Drone Engineer, you can expect to work on hands-on projects involving drone assembly, testing, and data analysis. Your daily tasks may include assisting with flight tests, troubleshooting technical issues, and collaborating with senior engineers on developing new drone features or improving existing systems. You'll likely work closely with multidisciplinary teams, such as software developers and project managers, to ensure the successful deployment of drone technology. This role provides excellent exposure to real-world engineering challenges and is a great opportunity to build technical skills and industry contacts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Co Op Drone Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Co Op Drone Engineer, you need foundational knowledge in engineering principles, robotics, and programming, usually supported by coursework or experience in aerospace, electrical, or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with drone platforms, CAD software, embedded systems, and tools like ROS (Robot Operating System) is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication help you excel in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensuring precise drone design, reliable system integration, and successful project delivery.

What is the difference between Co Op Drone Engineer vs Drone Technician?

AspectCo Op Drone EngineerDrone Technician
Required CredentialsRelevant engineering degree, certifications in drone technologyTechnical diploma or certification in drone maintenance
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, testing fields, collaborative projectsField repairs, maintenance workshops, on-site troubleshooting
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, aerospace firms, research institutionsDrone service providers, maintenance companies, agricultural firms

While both roles involve working with drones, Co Op Drone Engineers focus on designing, developing, and testing drone systems during their cooperative education term, often in engineering environments. Drone Technicians primarily handle maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting of existing drone equipment. The roles complement each other within the drone industry but differ in responsibilities and work settings.

How much does a Co Op Drone Engineer make?

A Co Op Drone Engineer typically earns between $15 and $25 per hour, depending on the location, level of experience, and the company's pay structure. Internships or co-op positions may offer lower wages compared to full-time roles but provide valuable industry experience and skills in drone technology and engineering tools.

Chemical Engineer Co-Op

Storion Energy

Billerica, MA โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Posted 7 days ago

Job description

We are looking to hire a Co-Op starting in January 2027 and working through July 2027.

Storion Energy is a joint venture between Stryten Energy and Largo inc. and is at the forefront of commercializing Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFBs) within the United States. Largo is a vanadium mining company with the only western-friendly vanadium mine in the world, located in Brazil. Stryten is a leading lead-acid battery manufacturer supplying energy storage solutions to the automotive, industrial, and stationary power markets.

Storion Energy was formed from the VRFB divisions of each company and is focused on supplying specialty VRFB components to the long-duration energy storage (LDES) market. We are uniquely positioned to drive down costs to allow new entrants into the flow battery market, which will drive competition with lithium-based LDES products.

VRFB LDES products help address renewable energy intermittency issues, provide grid resiliency, and enable a cleaner electricity grid.

This position pays $25 per hour and requires on-site daily work in Billerica, MA.

The Chemical Engineering Co-op will support Storionโ€™s product development team with a focus on our electrochemistry development needs. This individual will support sub-scale and full-scale product development efforts, which may include investigating the performance of our VRFB cells and stacks, determining electrolyte properties and performance, developing processing techniques and operations for eventual scale-up, and working on other projects as needs arise.
Storionโ€™s product development facility is located in Billerica, MA, and we are seeking a full-time co-op to support our cutting-edge product development efforts. This is an in-person role, and the successful candidate is expected to be in the office 5 days per week.

The Chemical Engineering Co-op will work under the direct supervision and guidance of Senior Engineers in support of Engineering projects. The Co-op will contribute to these projects by performing a wide range of assignments, which may include:
  • Working on product development, including concept development and testing
  • Hands-on testing in the electrochemical lab and shop floor
  • Operation of scale, sub-scale, and full-scale equipment and machinery
  • Data collection, processing, and analysis
  • Chemical Process design, control, and operation development
  • Kinetics determination and modeling
  • Unit operation design/equipment specification
  • Process documentation
  • Statistical process control
  • Test method development
  • Root cause analysis
  • Material compatibility testing

Many more exciting and challenging experiences

  • Working towards BS in Chemical Engineering or BA/BS in Chemistry
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • You must have housing and transportation to our Billerica, MA location. Public transportation is not available to our office.
  • You must be able and willing to work with battery electrolyte, which is acidic and requires wearing PPE (lab coat, gloves, safety glasses or goggles, and other job-specific PPE)
  • Ability to lift 30-pound boxes of parts
  • Students entering their second or third co-op preferred
We expect our co-ops to be hands-on self-starters who can take a project from start to finish with ease. The successful candidate should already have excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills that can be applied to cross-functional teams. The individual should be skilled at problem identification, prototyping and iterative design, validation testing, and troubleshooting.

Our environment is casual but professional, and our co-ops are exposed to senior-level leaders. We donโ€™t want our co-ops to sit on the sidelines โ€“ we want you to challenge us and provide creative ways to approach projects. As a teammate, you will gain hands-on experience working on meaningful projects, network with engineers across the organization, learn what it is like to be an engineer at Storion Energy, and finally, make a lasting impact while developing lifelong skills and competencies to elevate your future career.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship now or at any time in the future.

Storion Energy is an equal opportunity employer where an applicant's qualifications are considered without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other basis prohibited by law.
