Cncf information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the CNCF position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Foundation) Engineer or Specialist role, you need a strong background in cloud-native technologies, container orchestration, and software development, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Kubernetes, Docker, Helm, and certifications like CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) or CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer) are highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you stand out when collaborating on complex cloud-native projects. These abilities are crucial to effectively design, deploy, and manage scalable, reliable cloud infrastructures in fast-paced, collaborative environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by CNCF engineers, and how can they successfully overcome them?

CNCF engineers often encounter challenges such as scaling distributed systems, ensuring security in dynamic environments, and keeping up with the rapidly evolving ecosystem of cloud-native tools. To address these obstacles, successful engineers prioritize continuous learning, leverage automation for efficiency, and actively participate in knowledge sharing within their teams and communities. Collaboration with DevOps teams, developers, and IT security professionals is crucial for building robust solutions. Adapting to new technologies and embracing open-source best practices also helps CNCF engineers remain effective and competitive in their roles.

What is a CNCF?

A CNCF job typically refers to a role related to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), which oversees open-source cloud-native technologies like Kubernetes, Prometheus, and Envoy. These jobs can include positions such as cloud engineers, DevOps engineers, site reliability engineers (SREs), and software developers working with containerized applications. Professionals in CNCF-related roles focus on building, managing, and scaling cloud-native infrastructures using tools from the CNCF ecosystem. Employers hiring for these roles often seek expertise in Kubernetes, cloud platforms, and CI/CD pipelines.

Job description

Broadcom is seeking a visionary Director of Engineering to lead the development of vSphere Kubernetes Service (VKS) and our strategic contributions to the CNCF upstream community. This isn't just a management role; it’s a seat at the table for the future of the private cloud. Reporting to Senior Leadership, you will have the mandate to define and execute on the product vision while making strategic investments in the upstream community to deliver a killer k8s experience.

Role The successful candidate will lead a world-class engineering organization, fostering a culture of technical excellence and rapid innovation. You will be responsible for the end-to-end delivery of the vSphere Kubernetes Service (VKS), ensuring it meets the rigorous demands of global enterprise customers while simultaneously elevating Broadcom’s influence within the upstream Kubernetes community. By mentoring a leadership layer of managers and staff engineers, you will bridge the gap between complex infrastructure primitives and seamless cloud-native experiences, driving the strategic roadmap that defines the future of the private cloud. Your success will be measured by the stability of our platform, the velocity of our releases, and our standing as a top-tier contributor to the CNCF ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities
  • Engineering Leadership: Lead multiple high-performing engineering teams focused on VKS core development, lifecycle management, and deep integration with vSphere, NSX, and vSAN.
  • Upstream Strategy: Define and execute Broadcom’s upstream contribution roadmap. You will ensure our engineers are influential in key Kubernetes Special Interest Groups (SIGs).
  • Platform Excellence: Own the end-to-end SDLC for VKS, ensuring production-grade reliability, security compliance, and seamless "day 2" operations for enterprise customers.
  • Vision: Partner with the Architects, Product Management, Program Management and other Directors which drive related areas to ensure there is a common roadmap and execution plan.
  • Community Advocacy: Act as an ambassador for Broadcom in the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) ecosystem.
Required Experience
  • Engineering Leadership at Scale: Proven track record of successfully leading and scaling multiple engineering teams, including experience managing "managers of managers" in a distributed or global environment.
  • Cloud-Native Domain Expertise: Deep technical understanding and 7+ years of experience in delivering enterprise software/solutions related to Kubernetes, cloud infrastructure, or large-scale distributed systems (e.g., IaaS/PaaS offerings).
  • Strategic Impact: Demonstrated ability to define and execute a complex technical strategy, translating business goals into a clear engineering roadmap and measurable outcomes.
  • Organizational Development: Experience recruiting, mentoring, and retaining high-caliber technical talent and fostering a culture of technical excellence and accountability.
  • Education/Experience: Bachelors and 18+ years OR Masters and 16+ years related experience, in which a minimum of 6+ years is in management.
Desired Experience
  • Kubernetes/CNCF Influence: Active involvement or significant contributions to the Kubernetes ecosystem or a broader CNCF project (e.g., as a maintainer, substantial contributor, or SIG leader).
  • Platform Mastery: Experience building or operating large-scale control planes, IaaS/PaaS offerings, or managing platforms comparable to EKS, GKE, or OpenShift.
  • Hypervisor/Virtualization Knowledge: Familiarity with the vSphere ecosystem (vSphere, NSX, vSAN) or other enterprise virtualization platforms.
Compensation and Benefits
  • The annual base salary range for this position is $174,400 - $ 279,000. As a valued member of our team, you'll be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus and the opportunity to receive not only a competitive new hire equity grant, but also annual equity awards, connecting your success directly to the company's growth. All subject to relevant plan documents and award agreements.
  • Broadcom offers a competitive and comprehensive benefits package: Medical, dental and vision plans, 401(K) participation including company matching, Employee Stock Purchase Program (ESPP), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), company paid holidays, paid sick leave and vacation time.
  • The company follows all applicable laws for Paid Family Leave and other leaves of absence.
