What is a CNC plasma cutter operator?

CNC Plasma Cutter Operators are skilled technicians who use computer numerical control (CNC) machines to cut, shape, and fabricate metal parts using a high-temperature plasma torch. They read technical drawings, set up equipment, load materials, and monitor the cutting process to ensure precision and safety. These operators also perform routine maintenance on the machines and may troubleshoot issues that arise during production. Their work is essential in industries like manufacturing, construction, and automotive for creating custom metal components.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a CNC plasma cutter operator?

To thrive as a CNC Plasma Cutter Operator, you need a solid understanding of blueprint reading, metalworking techniques, and CNC machine operation, often supported by vocational training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, CNC control systems, and plasma cutting machinery is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help operators excel in precision work and team environments. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate production, workplace safety, and efficient workflow in manufacturing settings.

What are common challenges faced by CNC plasma cutter operators, and how can they be addressed?

CNC Plasma Cutter Operators often face challenges such as maintaining precise cutting quality, troubleshooting machine errors, and managing material waste. Staying organized and regularly calibrating equipment helps ensure accuracy, while keeping up-to-date with machine maintenance reduces unexpected downtime. Collaborating closely with other team members, such as fabricators and engineers, can also help quickly resolve issues and improve workflow efficiency.

CNC Plasma Table Operator / Welder-Fabricator

Downtime Rebuild LLC.

Full-time

Job description

Overview

Downtime Rebuild is hiring an experienced Welder-Fabricator who can independently operate a CNC plasma table in our Cincinnati shop.

CNC plasma-table operation is the primary requirement for this position. This is not a training role for someone whose only experience is using a handheld plasma cutter or welding pieces that another employee has already prepared.

The right person can receive a file from engineering, load it into the plasma table, set up the material and cut settings, run the job and produce finished parts. AutoCAD or SolidWorks experience is helpful but not required because our engineers create the drawings.

Responsibilities

- Receive drawing and production files from engineering and load them into the CNC plasma table’s software or controller.

- Verify the part layout, material type, thickness, consumables and cut settings.

- Load and position raw material on the plasma table.

- Independently operate the table from setup through the completed cut.

- Monitor cut quality and make necessary adjustments.

- Perform basic torch, nozzle, consumable and cut-quality troubleshooting.

- Inspect completed parts for accuracy before fabrication and assembly.

- Read blueprints, technical drawings and specifications.

- Fabricate metal components from raw material rather than only welding pre-cut pieces.

- Perform MIG, TIG and stick welding as needed.

- Use grinders, saws, press brakes, measuring tools and other fabrication equipment.

- Maintain a clean and safe work area and keep equipment in good condition.

Required Qualifications

- Hands-on experience independently operating a CNC plasma table in a fabrication or manufacturing environment.

- Ability to clearly explain the steps personally performed from receiving a file through producing finished cut parts.

- Experience loading files, setting up material and cut parameters, operating the table and checking finished parts.

- Metal fabrication and welding experience.

- Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings.

- Ability to use calipers, micrometers, tape measures and other measuring tools.

- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.

- Ability to work independently and safely.

Experience that does not qualify

- Handheld or manual plasma-cutting experience without CNC plasma-table experience.

- Only welding parts that another employee cut and prepared.

- Watching or assisting another operator without independently setting up and running the table.

- Experience that would require training on the basic operation of a CNC plasma table.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with Lincoln, Torchmate or similar CNC plasma tables.

- AutoCAD or SolidWorks experience.

- Experience with press brakes and other metal-fabrication equipment.
