How much do cmm inspector jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 17, 2026, the average hourly pay for cmm inspector in the United States is $27.34, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.04 and $30.77 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What type of inspector gets paid the most?

Among inspection roles, quality control or senior manufacturing inspectors, such as CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) inspectors with advanced certifications and extensive experience, tend to earn the highest salaries. Specialized inspectors with expertise in precision measurement, calibration, and advanced tools often command higher pay due to their technical skills and critical responsibilities.

What are some common challenges faced by CMM Inspectors and how can they be addressed?

CMM Inspectors often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex technical drawings, maintaining accuracy under tight deadlines, and troubleshooting equipment calibrations. To address these, it's important to stay up-to-date with GD&T standards, communicate closely with engineering and production teams, and regularly participate in training on CMM software and hardware maintenance. Proactive problem-solving and attention to detail are key to ensuring accurate measurements and smooth workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CMM Inspector, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CMM Inspector, you need a solid understanding of mechanical inspection techniques, blueprint reading, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), typically with a background in manufacturing or quality assurance. Familiarity with Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), software such as PC-DMIS or Calypso, and sometimes certifications like ASQ Certified Quality Inspector are important. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication set outstanding CMM Inspectors apart. These skills ensure precise measurement, maintain product quality standards, and support efficient manufacturing processes.

What is the difference between Cmm Inspector vs Cmm Technician?

AspectCmm InspectorCmm Technician
CertificationsOften requires CMM-specific certifications, quality assurance trainingMay hold similar certifications, with additional technical or programming skills
Work EnvironmentPrimarily inspects parts using coordinate measuring machines in manufacturing settingsOperates, maintains, and programs CMM equipment, often in production or quality labs
Job FocusInspecting and verifying parts against specificationsSetting up, calibrating, and troubleshooting CMM equipment

While both roles involve working with coordinate measuring machines, the Cmm Inspector primarily focuses on inspection and quality verification, whereas the Cmm Technician handles equipment setup, maintenance, and programming. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers identify the right role based on skills and responsibilities.

What Is a CMM Inspector?

A CMM inspector is responsible for inspecting a coordinate measuring machine (CMM). A CMM machine measures the axis or surface of an object using a probe. In this career, your job duties include developing programs to inspect the CMM machine, ensuring the machine is working correctly, and calibrating the machine to ensure proper measuring. The qualifications needed for a career as a CMM inspector include a high school diploma and certifications in the use of a CMM machine. You also need strong analytical skills and experience working with the CMM machine and its software.

What are CMM Inspectors?

CMM Inspectors are professionals who operate Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) to accurately measure the physical geometrical characteristics of an object. They ensure that manufactured parts and products meet strict engineering specifications by using precision instruments and software to collect data and analyze measurements. CMM Inspectors play a critical role in quality control within manufacturing industries, helping to detect defects and maintain product consistency. Their expertise helps prevent costly errors and ensures that products meet safety and performance standards.

How much does a CMM technician make?

A CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) inspector or technician typically earns between $40,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Skilled technicians with certifications like ASQ or NADCAP may earn higher salaries, especially in manufacturing or aerospace industries where precision measurement is critical.

What is a CMM inspector?

A CMM inspector is a quality control professional who uses Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) to inspect and verify the dimensions and tolerances of manufactured parts. They ensure parts meet design specifications by performing precise measurements, often requiring knowledge of metrology, inspection standards, and calibration procedures.

How to become a CMM inspector?

To become a CMM inspector, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with training or experience in coordinate measuring machine (CMM) operation and inspection techniques. Many employers prefer candidates with certifications such as the Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) or specific CMM programming skills, and familiarity with measurement software and precision tools is beneficial.

Job description

A New Paradigm For Space Operations.

Who We Are:

Space Kinetic is a dual use space technology startup building a completely new architecture for space operations - one that brings the advantages of proliferated drone technology (low-cost, operationally flexible, attainable, distributed) to space missions while reducing the ecosystem's reliance on consumable fuel. In a world where many companies are focused on incrementally improving the status quo,  we are focused on creating something entirely different - an architecture underpinned by new first principles to meet the opportunities and challenges of the third space age head-on.  Our goal is to move away from one-to-one space architectures - where each satellite in a constellation has one (or a small # of) primary payloads attached to the bus -- and unlock a 'one-to-many' system, where each satellite has a large number of payloads which can be deployed from their host spacecraft at high velocities without firing a thruster.

This is not a role for someone looking for a traditional 40-hour work week. Space Kinetic is building ambitious, first-of-its-kind technology, and that requires urgency, ownership, and a high level of commitment to changing the foundational assumptions for everything we do in space.

What You'll Do:

  • We are seeking a CMM Inspector to support inspection of precision-machined aerospace components and ensure compliance with engineering and quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform surface plate and dimensional inspection of precision machined aerospace components
  • Inspect incoming and in-process parts to drawings, models, and work order specifications
  • Conduct complex dimensional and visual inspections using standard inspection tools
  • Program, operate, and maintain DCC CMM equipment using PC-DMIS
  • Create, verify, and maintain CMM programs for production and prototype parts
  • Review engineering drawings, GD&T, and specifications to confirm compliance
  • Document and report non-conformances and support root-cause/corrective actions
  • Partner with machinists and engineers to improve quality and reduce defects
  • Support quality system processes, documentation, and continuous improvement efforts
  • Verify certifications, material documentation, and supplier conformance

What It Takes:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or accredited equivalent
  • 2+ years of quality inspection experience in a machining or manufacturing environment
  • Experience inspecting precision machined components
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience with PC-DMIS and DCC CMM programming
  • Strong GD&T and blueprint reading skills (ASME Y14.5)
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 and/or AS9100 quality systems
  • Experience working in an aerospace or prototype machine shop
  • Proficiency with inspection tools: calipers, micrometers, indicators, height gages, thread gages, etc.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation discipline
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative shop environment
  • Familiar with manual machines
  • Experience with 3 axis CNC's

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 lbs
  • Overtime and occasional weekend work may be required based on production needs

Where You'll Be:

  • The position is onsite at our headquarters in El Segundo, CA.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive Base Salary + Equity-Based Compensation
  • Highly Competitive PTO and Holiday Calendar
  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision Coverage
  • Unique Performance-Based Bonus Structure
