What is cloud operations?

Cloud Operations, often referred to as CloudOps, involve the management, monitoring, and optimization of cloud-based resources and services. Professionals in this field ensure that cloud infrastructure and applications run smoothly, remain secure, and are cost-effective. This includes tasks such as deployment automation, performance monitoring, incident response, and implementing cloud security best practices. Cloud Operations teams work to maximize uptime, address technical issues quickly, and support organizational goals by leveraging cloud technologies.

What are some typical challenges faced in a cloud operations role, and how can they be managed effectively?

Professionals in Cloud Operations often encounter challenges such as ensuring system uptime, managing costs, and maintaining security across dynamic cloud environments. Responding quickly to incidents, automating routine tasks, and staying up to date with evolving cloud technologies are key strategies for success. Collaboration with development, security, and support teams is essential for troubleshooting and optimizing cloud services. Embracing a proactive monitoring approach and continuous learning helps address these challenges efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cloud operations professional, and why are they important?

To excel in Cloud Operations, you need a strong background in IT infrastructure, cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), and systems administration, often supported by relevant certifications like AWS Certified SysOps Administrator or Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator. Familiarity with automation tools (like Terraform or Ansible), CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help professionals stand out in this field. These competencies are crucial for ensuring reliable, secure, and efficient cloud environments that support business operations.

  • Monitor dashboards, logs, alerts, metrics, and application health to proactively identify issues and minimize service disruptions.
  • Support 24x7 watch floor operations by identifying service degradation, failed dataflows, application errors, and infrastructure issues.
  • Perform Linux systems administration tasks, including reviewing logs, managing services, validating resource utilization, and supporting server maintenance activities.
  • Support cloud operations within AWS environments using the AWS Management Console and AWS CLI to monitor system health, perform operational troubleshooting, and maintain cloud resources.
  • Collaborate with software development, systems engineering, infrastructure, and operations teams to maintain secure and reliable enterprise services.
  • Contribute to automation, continuous monitoring, and operational improvements supporting the Secure the Enterprise initiative.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Active TS/SCI clearance with Polygraph required.
  • Candidates must meet one of the following education and experience requirements:
    • High School Diploma or GED and at least ten (10) years of relevant experience.
    • Associate's degree and at least eight (8) years of relevant experience.
    • Bachelor's degree and at least six (6) years of relevant experience.
    • Master's degree and at least four (4) years of relevant experience.
    • Doctoral degree and at least two (2) years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in one or more of the following technical areas:
    • Monitoring & Watch Floor Operations: Experience using Grafana, Kibana, Splunk, CloudWatch, or similar monitoring platforms for dashboard monitoring, alert triage, log analysis, incident response, and shift turnover.
    • Linux Systems Administration: Experience administering Linux systems, including monitoring system health, managing services, reviewing logs, rebooting servers, and validating CPU, memory, and disk utilization.
    • Cloud Operations: Experience supporting AWS environments using the AWS Management Console or AWS CLI, including EC2 instance monitoring, service health checks, Lambda, C2E, HCI, and operational troubleshooting.
    • Application & Dataflow Support: Experience supporting Apache NiFi, Cribl, Kafka, Logstash, or similar technologies used for data ingestion, queue monitoring, data movement, and application health.
    • DevOps & Automation: Experience using Terraform, Ansible, GitLab Pipelines, Docker, or similar automation and deployment technologies.

Desired Skills:

  • DoD IAT Level II certification preferred (e.g., Security+ CE, CySA+, GSEC, GICSP, SSCP, CND, or equivalent).
