Position Description
The St. David's School of Nursing at Texas State Universityis seeking a full-time faculty member at the Clinical Assistant Professor or Clinical Associate Professor level, who will also serve as Director of our Simulation Laboratory, with a nine-month teaching appointment and required summer contract.
The primary focus of this role is based in Round Rock, with approximately 10% travel to our San Marcos location to engage with and support our satellite simulation lab. To support your work, university mileage reimbursement is available for pre-approved, simulation-specific operational activities between campuses.
This key role in our School of Nursing will be responsible for the strategic direction, operational management, and coordination of student learning experiences within the clinical simulation laboratories. This role encompasses ensuring a high-quality, effective, and interprofessional learning environment that aligns with best practices in simulation education. This position oversees all aspects of the simulation lab, including the Standardized Patient Program.
This faculty member role includes a partial teaching appointment as needed within the nursing program and faculty responsibilities of teaching, scholarship, and service. This position features a reduced teaching load of nursing courses per semester to allow dedicated focus on simulation administration.
The Director also participates in the College of Health Professions Interprofessional Education (IPE) Committee, fostering collaborative learning opportunities across all health-related disciplines.
Director of the Simulation Lab Role:
Operations:

  • Develop, manage, and maintain the budget for all clinical simulation laboratory operational expenses.
  • Ensure all simulation laboratories are adequately equipped, functional, and maintained for optimal student and faculty use.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluatea dedicated team of simulation technicians and support staff to ensure efficient operations and high-quality performance.
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive inventory of simulation supplies and equipment, including a proactive maintenance schedule for all equipment.
  • Develop and manage a master schedule for the utilization of simulation laboratories by each course and individual lab space.
  • Maintain a detailed file of laboratory objectives for each nursing course, outlining the nature of the simulation experience, required staffing, and the designated laboratory.
  • Seek and pursue external grant funding opportunities to support the growth and advancement of the simulation laboratories and IPE initiatives.
  • Actively pursue and/or maintain certification as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH).
  • Provide leadership in the pursuit of endorsement from the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL).

Faculty Support:
  • Provide expert consultation and support to nursing faculty and students in the effective utilization of the various simulation laboratories and associated technologies.
  • Collaborate with nursing faculty to develop, review, and maintain a comprehensive file of simulation scenarios, clinical protocols, and debriefing strategies for student practice and remediation.

Student Support:
  • Develop and implement robust systems for evaluating and measuring student learning outcomes within simulation experiences to enhance the overall effectiveness of simulation-based education.

Representation and Interprofessional Education (IPE) Leadership:
  • Participate in the College of Health Professions Interprofessional Education (IPE) Committee, providing leadership and direction for interprofessional learning initiatives.
  • Participate in developing and implementing a strategic plan for the IPE Committee in collaboration with faculty representatives from all departments and schools within the College of Health Professions and in alignment with the School of Nursing Director's vision.
  • Foster and facilitate interprofessional learning activities and collaborative opportunities for students across various health professions.

Faculty Role:
  • Fulfill the duties and functions of a nursing faculty member, including active engagement in teaching undergraduate and/or graduate nursing courses (partial faculty appointment).
  • Engage in scholarly and creative activities, including research, publications, presentations, and other forms of professional contribution.
  • Participate actively in service activities at the department, school, university, and/or professional levels.
  • Engage in ongoing continuing education activities to maintain individual professional licensure and/or certification.

Required Qualifications
For the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor:
  • Must hold a BSN and a Master's degree in nursing; OR a BSN and a Master's degree in a related field with 12 hours of graduate nursing education courses.
  • At least five years clinical experience in a registered nurse role.
  • Eligible for Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in Texas.
  • Minimum of two years of demonstrated teaching experience in a professional school of nursing, or equivalent.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and learning consistent with the program vision, mission and goals as evidenced by a presentation during the campus visit with faculty.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and clinical partners, contributing to a positive team environment.

For the rank of Clinical Associate Professor, in addition to those required above:
  • A demonstrated record of accomplishments or activities in scholarship, teaching, and service.
  • A minimum of five years of full-time teaching experience at the university level or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated strong collegial relationships.

The successful applicant will receive the appropriate rank and title based on university and school established standards.
Preferred Qualifications
For both ranks:
  • Certification in Simulation Education such as Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE).
  • Earned doctorate in nursing or related field or enrolled in a doctoral program with an earned bachelor's or master's degree in nursing.
  • Experience in managing the daily operations, personnel, and equipment and supplies of a simulation laboratory serving 100 or greater BSN students and telehealth simulations for MSN students.
  • Experience managing Standardized Patient programs.
  • Experience in curriculum design, program development, simulation, informatics, or communications technologies in nursing education.
  • Record of scholarly/creative activities, including grantsmanship or funded projects.
  • Experience with accreditation, program evaluation, and assessment processes.
  • Certification in a nursing specialty or in nursing education.
  • Experience with online or hybrid teaching modalities.
  • Experience in interprofessional education and strategic plan development.
  • Demonstrated collegial leadership including mentoring peers, contributing to inclusive excellence, and supporting innovation through teamwork.
  • Experience building and sustaining community and clinical partnerships.
  • Evidence of fostering collaborative team development, conflict resolution, and peer support in academic or clinical settings.
