Job description

The Clinical Director of the Integrated Pain Management Program provides clinical, operational, and strategic leadership for an interdisciplinary pain management program within a community health center. This position oversees the delivery of integrated behavioral health services in collaboration with primary care providers, medical specialists, behavioral health clinicians, care coordinators, chiropractors, physical rehabilitation professionals, and other members of the healthcare team.

The Clinical Director is responsible for ensuring high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centered care that addresses the biological, psychological, and social factors contributing to chronic pain while improving patient outcomes, reducing opioid reliance when appropriate, and enhancing quality of life.

The completion of these duties, tasks, or assignments requires a high level of independent judgment and decision-making in the execution of the scope or authority and responsibility for the position. As the Clinical Director for the Buena Vida Integrated Pain Clinic must be able to successfully perform all essential functions, duties, tasks, assignments, and responsibilities assigned within El Rio Health at a location assigned by management. The Senior Clinician in this position works with general direction and review and has discretion and independent judgment authority with respect to matters of significance for the assigned area.

This position reports to the Chief Medical Officer.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Performs daily clinical functions within their scope of practice
  • Provide clinical oversight of medical services within the integrated pain management program.
  • Develop and maintain evidence-based standards of care for chronic pain treatment.
  • Promote a biopsychosocial approach to pain management.
  • Ensure compliance with state, federal, accreditation, and organizational standards.
  • Lead multidisciplinary case consultations and treatment planning.
  • Review complex patient cases and provide clinical recommendations.
  • Promote trauma-informed and culturally responsive care practices.

  • Administrative hours will focus on the following:
    • Providing education to PCP team as needed on a regular basis, educating, and mentoring new Buena Vida Integrated Pain Care Clinical Providers on integrated care methods for the treatment of chronic pain, directing providers and all staff about safe opioid prescribing, opioid weaning, and screening for substance use disorders that are directed by state and federal guidelines and other peer reviewed sources.
    • Assisting the Director of Integrated Behavioral Health Programs with coordination of clinical program aspects.
    • As the Buena Vida Integrated Pain Care Program clinical director, the primary focus is on providing evidence-based practices to chronic pain patients in an El Rio Health outpatient clinic setting while also providing clinical supervision of providers.
    • Evaluates patients, performing examinations, and establishing preventive health practices with an integrated inclusive team approach.
  • Analyzes reports test results medical records and examinations to diagnose condition of patients pain and creates treatment plans with including a team approach for the individual patient based on all aspects of care and wellbeing for mind and body.
    • Provides advice to patients for lifestyle and diet changes that may improve their health or help to treat the pain and health issues.
    • Prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens to treat identified and documented medical and/or other conditions in partnership clinical pharmacy team members.

Minimum Education and Experience:
  • Doctor of Medicine degree or Doctor of Osteopathy degree from an accredited medical educational institution and successful completion of an accredited residency program.

If applicable, equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered, and must be directly related to the functions and responsibilities of the job.

Required Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations:
  • Board Certified in their clinical specialty. 
  • Must have and maintain an active and unencumbered Arizona state license as a Physician including prescriptive authority from the Board of Medical Examiners, State of Arizona or Arizona Board of Osteopathic Examiners in Medicine and Surgery.
  • Must obtain and maintain current Federal Drug Enforcement Agency License (DEA) for prescribing controlled substances.
  • Must obtain and maintain current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers.
  • Remain current will all licensure requirements, compliance training, Code of Conduct and other regulations as mandated by state and federal laws.
  • Employees in this position are required to have reliable transportation that can meet any operational reassignments of the organization during the workday. If an employee is driving during work hours, the employee is required to possess a valid drivers license and must comply with Arizona vehicle insurance. 
Preferred Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities:
  • 25 years of clinical experience treating patients with acute and chronic pain.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based pain management guidelines.
  • Experience with multimodal pain treatment rather than opioid-only approaches.
  • Experience providing primary care and diagnostic services in a clinical
  • Experience prescribing appropriate medications (including controlled substances), treatments, and health regimens to treat chronic pain conditions.
  • Experience collaborating with specialists to explore patient health conditions and diagnose health issues. 
  • Experience working in a trauma-informed, integrated care model. 
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) with the ability to speak, read and write in both languages.
