Job Description
Medical technicians participate in the process of analyzing samples of blood, tissue and body fluids to determine chemical content, cell count, drug levels or blood type; they may also assist in the process of searching for specific microorganisms like bacteria or parasites. Preparing the samples for examination, using automated equipment and specialized instrumentation, and assist with performing numerous complicated tests simultaneously,
May work in a medical facility or in an independently run laboratory, laboratory technicians often work with infectious specimens. Infection control and sterilization protocols must be followed to minimize these hazards. Laboratory technicians can also expect to spend many hours standing in a laboratory.
Job Duties
The day-to-day duties of a medical technician include complex analysis of microscopic, immunologic, biologic, bacteriologic, hematologic, and chemical tests and their results. Some tasks that a laboratory technician might be asked to perform could include:

Additional Information
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING: Must be eligible for Medical Laboratory Technician certification upon hire. Medical Laboratory Certification must be obtained within the first 9 months of employment in one of the following certifications:
- MLT with ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists)
- MLT with AMT (American Medical Technologists)
