The Medical Technologist/MLS Advanced is an experienced Registered MLS/Med Tech who assists the Supervisor, Manager, or Coordinator with advanced technical functions within the department they are supporting. These caregivers operate at an advanced level, overseeing quality control, advanced instrument maintenance and troubleshooting. The Advanced MLS ensures department regulatory compliance and may assist with system and on-site CAP inspections. Caregivers in this role will gain valuable experience and knowledge to help prepare them for the workplace and career advancement into Technical or Supervisory positions.

  • Ensures successful participation in external proficiency surveys by completing Proficiency testing entry and regulatory compliance

  • Leading and assisting in Inventory Control

  • Support the supervisor with personnel duties within the technical area, such as event investigations, training, and competency assessment.

  • Support the supervisor with technical duties, such as AMRS, Correlations, recalls and instrument troubleshooting

  • Leading and assisting with new instrument evaluation and implementation

  • Developing and refining policies and procedures.

  • May also attend or be selected to lead system Work Groups, supporting standardization initiatives within Laboratory Services.

  • Maintain their bench competency and work bench shifts and take call, as required by site

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory/medical technology science or chemical, physical, biological, or equivalent. Education must be obtained through an accredited institution. Applicants with chemical, physical, biological science or equivalent bachelor's degree will be subject to education verification which may include transcript/credit evaluation by Laboratory Services Quality Assurance leadership, required.

  • Medical Technologist/Medical Lab Scientist ASCP certification or equivalent as approved by the Manager and Human Resources. Certification must be maintained to remain in the job, required.

  • Two years of clinical laboratory experience, required.

  • Flexibility to work a variety of shifts that may include weekends, holidays, nights, and on-call, required.

  • Montana applicants must have State Licensure to work in the State of MT, required.

  • Foreign applicants must submit a foreign transcript by an acceptable agency approved by Laboratory Quality Assurance, required.

  • Experience leading training and education of staff at all levels, Preferred.

  • Experience developing, leading, implementing department initiatives, Preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.

  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.

  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.

  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.

  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)

  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.

  • For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
