Job description

Summary:
The Climbing Wall Coordinator is responsible for supervising the daily operations of the climbing wall and the climbing wall staff to ensure a safe climbing environment for members and guests.
Variable schedule to include day, evening and weekend shifts.
Responsibilities:
1. Communication Complete duties as assigned by Fitness Director. Meet regularly with Fitness Director to discuss climbing wall management, safety, programming and budget. Exhibit a professional demeanor at all times when communicating with members, guests and other staff members. Attend all required climbing wall staff meetings, trainings, programming and All-Staff meetings. Have a working knowledge of and be able to answer any questions related to UNC Wellness Centers and the climbing wall.
2. Customer Service Provide superior customer service that elevates the member experience. Respond to customer concerns and requests in timely and effective manner. Relay customer requests as appropriate to each area manager and assist other areas with problem resolution and idea implementation. Provide and evaluate climbing wall and programs using surveys or other means of feedback procurement.
3. Instruction Provide instruction to students during scheduled class programs. Administer all program tests including belay and sport climbing. Supervise all climbers while identifying and correcting improper use of climbing equipment. Display exceptional customer service and professionalism to all members and guests. Demonstrate excellent proficiency in climbing techniques and the ability to teach students in proper climbing techniques and use of equipment.
4. Management Directly supervise, recruit, train and evaluate the climbing wall staff and perform ongoing coaching. Maintain and ensure climbing wall staff remains current with required certifications and training. Train the climbing wall instructors including belaying, route setting and general rock wall maintenance. Develop and implement the climbing wall staff schedule. Responsible for day to day appearance and operation of the climbing wall.
5. Programming Develop and implement all climbing programs, challenges, clinics and other incentive programs related to the climbing wall. Develop and implement outdoor adventure trips. Develop and maintain the marketing for the climbing wall programs in coordination with the Marketing Coordinator. Prepare budget for climbing wall operations in conjunction with Fitness Director. Attend programming meetings regularly.
6. Safety Enforce UNC Wellness centers climbing wall policies and procedures to ensure the safe and responsible use of the climbing facility and equipment. Maintain and ensure participants records are current and up to date and that all participants have a current Release and Waiver From on file. Keep and maintain a schedule of facility and equipment inspection. Keep and maintain a schedule and procedure for changing climbing routes and equipment needing to be replaced.
Prefer:
  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management, Kinesiology, Outdoor Education, or a related field preferred
  • Climbing Wall Instructor certification Level 1 and 2 preferred, or ability to obtain within 3-6 months of hire
  • At least 1 year climbing wall experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of climbing wall operations, including route setting, equipment inspection, and risk management
  • Familiarity with industry safety standards and best practices
  • Experience with youth programs, group facilitation, or community engagement initiatives
