Job description

Note: The location for this potential opportunity is with the Western United States. Particularly in the states of CA, AZ, NV, and WA.
The Construction Technician - Commercial Refrigeration performs journeyman-level construction, installation, and modification work on commercial refrigeration and HVAC/R systems in accordance with collective bargaining agreements, industry standards, and applicable codes. Work is performed on new construction, renovations, and system retrofits in commercial and industrial environments.
This position requires technical proficiency, safe work practices, and adherence to union work rules while supporting high-quality project execution and customer satisfaction.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Install, modify, and commission commercial refrigeration and HVAC/R systems using construction drawings, blueprints, specifications, and project documents
  • Perform skilled pipefitting, brazing, welding, electrical, and mechanical work related to refrigeration construction projects
  • Install and connect:
    • Compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, heat exchangers, and refrigeration rack systems
    • Pneumatic, electronic, and electric control valves
    • Refrigerant piping, line sets, air distribution systems, and ductwork
  • Pressure test, evacuate, and leak-test piping and joints using electronic detection equipment, gauges, or approved test methods in compliance with code and manufacturer standards
  • Perform electrical testing and verification of circuits, components, sensors, and controls related to refrigeration systems
  • Inspect completed installations to ensure compliance with project scope, safety standards, union agreements, and regulatory requirements
  • Coordinate work activities with forepersons, project managers, other trades, and inspectors to ensure efficient project progression
  • Maintain professional interaction with customers, general contractors, and jobsite personnel while representing the company and union
  • Accurately complete required job documentation, time entry, and check-in/check-out procedures per company and union standards
  • Participate in after-hours, emergency, or on-call rotations as defined by operational needs and collective bargaining agreements

Union, Safety, and Compliance Responsibilities
  • Work in full compliance with:
    • Collective bargaining agreements
    • OSHA and applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations
    • Environmental and refrigerant-handling requirements
  • Maintain required licenses, certifications, and union training credentials (e.g., EPA 608, OSHA, safety certifications)
  • Demonstrate consistent use of required PPE and safe work practices on all jobsites

Qualifications & Skills
  • Completion of a recognized union apprenticeship program or possession of journeyman status in refrigeration, pipefitting, HVAC/R, or a related trade
  • Proven experience in commercial refrigeration construction environments
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, specifications, and control drawings
  • Working knowledge of refrigeration systems, controls, piping practices, and startup procedures
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills related to installed systems
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work within a team-based, union construction environment

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, climb, kneel, stoop, and work in confined or elevated spaces
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 75 lbs
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions, jobsite environments, and noise levels
  • Potential exposure to refrigerants, chemicals, and jobsite hazards consistent with commercial construction work
