What is a Climate Resilience job?

A Climate Resilience job focuses on helping communities, organizations, or ecosystems prepare for, adapt to, and recover from climate-related challenges such as extreme weather, rising sea levels, and shifting environmental conditions. Professionals in this field work in government agencies, non-profits, private companies, and research institutions to develop policies, design infrastructure, and implement strategies that enhance sustainability and reduce climate risks. Their work may include disaster preparedness, community engagement, environmental planning, and policy advocacy to build long-term resilience against climate change.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Climate Resilience position, and why are they important?

To excel in Climate Resilience roles, candidates typically need expertise in environmental science, risk assessment, project management, and often a relevant degree in environmental studies, engineering, or urban planning. Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), climate modeling software, and relevant certifications like Certified Climate Change Professional (CC-P) are beneficial. Strong collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills set successful professionals apart, as these roles often require working with diverse stakeholders. These competencies enable effective planning, implementation, and communication of strategies that help communities and organizations adapt to climate change impacts.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Climate Resilience roles?

Professionals in Climate Resilience often face challenges such as translating complex climate data into actionable strategies, building consensus among stakeholders with diverse interests, and adapting solutions to site-specific or rapidly changing environmental conditions. The role may require balancing immediate needs with long-term planning, as well as staying current with evolving regulations and scientific findings. Overcoming these challenges requires strong analytical abilities, clear communication skills, and a proactive approach to continuous learning and adaptation. Teams are typically interdisciplinary, fostering collaboration but also requiring effective coordination and consensus-building skills.

Job description

What We're Looking For

The future of transportation is complex, evolving rapidly, and confronted with increased risk from climate hazards. HNTB's Resilient Infrastructure Solutions (RIS) team partners with clients to assess their vulnerability to extreme weather events and identify cost-effective solutions to mitigate risk and withstand changing conditions. We help clients navigate the uncertainty of the future through integrated services that prepare, adapt, and respond to change.
Our growing RIS team is seeking a creative, organized, and experienced engineer eager to work on some of the region's most exciting and transformative transportation projects. In this role, you will assist the development of climate resilience strategies for projects that prioritize safety, reduce disruption, protect our environment, and weather the complex, rapidly evolving future of our climate and the transportation sector.
You will perform analyses and assessments that integrate resilience and environmental excellence into our client's decision-making processes for programs, capital plans, and projects. This position will offer opportunities to expand your career in a multitude of directions, working alongside some of the region's best engineers and planners, and mentoring junior staff. As our RIS team grows, the ideal candidate should be able to share their experience with others in a way that promotes the development of less experienced staff and improves the performance of the whole team.
This position will primarily support resilience projects in the Northeast Division out of HNTB's Boston office, including supporting the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), Massachusetts Bay Transportation Agency (MBTA), with opportunities to support other transportation agencies across the country.

What You'll Bring:

  • Experience managing and coordinating work (planning and design) effectively across multiple technical disciplines and delivering projects successfully, profitably, and to the client's satisfaction.
  • Experience leading technical work in areas such as vulnerability/risk assessments, flood modeling, infrastructure planning, resilience standards, nature-based solutions, and/or economic and demographic analyses.
  • Leverage knowledge of civil engineering practices, such as hydrology and open channel hydraulics, bridge design, geotechnical engineering, etc., and associated requirements and technical resources/codes that govern these practices.
  • Ability to review plans and project documents (plans and specifications) for resilience considerations (re: heat, flooding, extreme precipitation, extreme storms, winter weather, and wind) and coordinate considerations across the project team, client, and regulators to communicate risk.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to support client service management, proposal preparation, and deliverables.
  • Ability to manage time, proactively forecast, and communicate project development needs.

What We Prefer:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
  • 8 years relevant experience
  • Experience coordinating with clients to progress projects and build effective relationships.

  • Familiarity with on-going research and planning related to climate and resilience by Federal agencies (e.g., FEMA, USACE, NOAA, HUD), State agencies, metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), and other regional or local entities.
  • Experience in probability and statistics applied to scenario-based planning with consideration for climate projections and economic impacts.
  • Experience conducting flood risk assessments using established software packages (e.g., HEC-FDA, G2CRM, beach-fx) or related economic modeling software.
  • Familiarity working with transportation demand models (e.g., TDM 23).
  • Capable of scripting analytical tools (e.g., Python, SQL, R) and able to leverage AI to automate workflows, enhance analysis, or build reproducible processes, where appropriate.
