Job description

Join McKissack & McKissack's team! We have an immediate opening for a Vice President, Strategic Growth & Client Relations in the Washington, D.C. area.

Washington, D.C. is entering one of the most dynamic periods of public and private investment in decades. New political leadership, historic infrastructure funding, transformational healthcare investments, educational modernization, utility expansion, aviation growth, and major sports and mixed-use developments are reshaping the region. McKissack & McKissack is seeking an exceptional executive to help lead that transformation. As Vice President of Strategic Growth & Client Relations, you will be responsible for identifying where the market is going, building executive relationships before opportunities emerge, and positioning McKissack to win the region’s most significant program management, construction management, architecture, and owner’s advisory assignments.

This is not a traditional business development role. You will influence where we grow, who we pursue, and how we position ourselves in one of the country’s most competitive markets.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the execution and continuous refinement of McKissack’s DMV growth strategy.
  • Validate market intelligence through executive outreach, industry engagement, client meetings, and competitive analysis.
  • Identify emerging markets, capital programs, funding opportunities, procurement trends, and legislative initiatives before they become public pursuits.
  • Develop strategic recommendations regarding markets, clients, partnerships, and future investments.
  • Develop and maintain a robust pipeline of qualified opportunities aligned with the firm’s strategic objectives.
  • Establish annual pipeline and revenue goals while developing capture strategies for priority pursuits.
  • Cultivate executive-level relationships with owners, developers, utilities, healthcare systems, higher education institutions, school districts, transportation agencies, and public-sector leaders.
  • Position McKissack as a trusted advisor long before procurements are released.
  • Identify the firm’s highest-value clients and develop long-term account strategies.
  • Strengthen relationships with existing clients while expanding into adjacent markets and services.
  • Develop executive engagement plans that deepen trust and increase repeat business.
  • Maintain strong relationships throughout the Washington metropolitan business community.
  • Monitor political leadership transitions, agency changes, funding priorities, and legislative developments that influence capital programs.
  • Represent McKissack at industry conferences, civic organizations, professional associations, and executive forums.
  • Serve as one of the firm’s most visible ambassadors.
  • Partner with Operations, Marketing, Project Executives, and Technical Leaders to develop winning strategies.
  • Help determine which opportunities McKissack should pursue—and equally important, which opportunities it should not.
  • Guide teaming strategies, client messaging, interview preparation, and executive positioning.
  • Improve overall win rates through disciplined pursuit strategy.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO, President, CGO and executive leadership team.
  • Provide ongoing insight into market trends, competitive positioning, client intelligence, and strategic risks.
  • Recommend hiring priorities and organizational capabilities needed to support future growth.

Success in this role will be measured by the ability to:

  • Generate sustainable growth in qualified pipeline opportunities.
  • Achieve revenue and business development goals within targeted markets.
  • Establish trusted advisor relationships with executive decision-makers.
  • Enhance pursuit effectiveness and improve capture and win rates.
  • Expand McKissack’s presence across emerging markets and service lines.
  • Increase client satisfaction, retention, and repeat business opportunities.
  • Provide valuable market and industry insights that support informed business decisions.
  • Advance McKissack’s strategic growth initiatives and overall business objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.15+ years of experience in business development, strategic growth, government relations, or market leadership within the AEC, infrastructure, or professional services industries.
  • Naturally identifies and creates new business opportunities.
  • Builds trusted relationships through active listening, credibility, and follow-through.
  • Demonstrates strong executive presence and the ability to engage senior leaders, public officials, and key stakeholders.
  • Thrives at the intersection of strategy, relationship-building, and execution.
  • Understands that long-term business development is driven by trust, consistency, and client service.
  • Established network of executive relationships across Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
  • Proven success developing strategic pipelines and driving revenue growth.
  • Experience working with public agencies, institutional owners, and complex capital program clients.
  • Strong knowledge of public procurement, funding mechanisms, and stakeholder management.
  • Exceptional strategic thinking, communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.

This is a role for someone who wants to influence the future—not simply respond to it.

You’ll have the freedom to think strategically, the support of an experienced executive team, and the opportunity to help shape some of the region’s most important civic, educational, healthcare, infrastructure, and cultural projects.

Every conversation has the potential to become a partnership. Every relationship has the potential to transform a community.

At McKissack, growth isn’t measured only by revenue. It’s measured by the lasting impact we create for our clients, our people, and the communities we serve.
