Job description

Substitute Teachers play a vital role in supporting student learning and maintaining continuity in the classroom during a teacherโ€™s absence. Under the direction of school leadership, the Substitute Teacher provides instruction to large and small groups, either by implementing lesson plans prepared by the classroom teacher or by developing appropriate plans as needed. Substitutes are expected to maintain a positive and orderly learning environment, uphold school standards for student behavior, and ensure smooth classroom operations. Depending on the length of the assignment, duties may also include grading assignments, checking homework, and providing feedback. Substitutes may also be assigned additional responsibilities such as lunch or recess supervision. A typical day is approximately 8 hours.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Deliver lessons and learning experiences as prescribed by the classroom teacher or administrator.

  • Provide individual and group instruction to support diverse learning needs and encourage student engagement.

  • Establish and maintain a safe, respectful, and well-managed classroom environment.

  • Follow all school policies, procedures, and classroom routines.

  • Support student participation in academic and non-academic activities.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned, which may include supervisory responsibilities.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
  • Experience working with middle and high school students.

  • Classroom teaching or instructional support experience.

  • Ability to effectively follow provided lesson plans (short-term assignments).

  • Ability to design and deliver lesson plans (long-term assignments).
