Job description

To assist the classroom teacher in carrying out the responsibilities of classroom management, materials preparation, child movement and control, learning engagement, and duties assigned which are within the range of skills and training.
REPORTS TO:
Classroom Teacher
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist the teacher in room set-up and preparation for the beginning of the school year.
  • Assist in greeting children at the beginning of each day and guiding them to early morning or afternoon activities.
  • Assist teacher in preparation of materials to be used and distribution of materials. All materials should be prepared for the next scheduled class day. These jobs include but are not limited to cutting out art projects, preparing work for copying or laminating, stapling, grading papers, and filling student folders with materials to be sent home to parents.
  • Grading will be limited to homework or class work, which includes true/false, multiple choice, matching, or short answer. All other grading will be the sole responsibility of the classroom teacher.
  • Teacher assistants will not enter grades into the grade book or RenWeb. This is the sole responsibility of the classroom teacher.
  • Learning engagement responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Assisting teacher with the implementation of curriculum in the classroom.
  • Reading to students.
  • Circulating among the students during cooperative learning activities, when students are using manipulatives, when students are engaged in whole-class correcting, and when students are engaged in whole-class practice (i.e. side A of the Saxon worksheet). Monitoring student engagement and understanding and understanding, and providing immediate feedback to the student.
  • Active facilitating, circulating, and monitoring of centers.
  • Assist teacher in keeping accurate records such as attendance, etc.
  • Assist in preparing bulletin board displays.
  • Help teacher to keep order in the classroom by assisting in discipline.
  • Assist at snack, recess, and lunchtime by helping the children and supervising whenever needed.
  • Accompany children to recess, Chapel, special programs, and field trips.
  • Assist in daily light housekeeping to maintain a clean classroom and bathroom area, including cleaning tables and/or supervising students in the cleaning of their desks.
  • Assist in proper hygiene in the classroom and bathroom area of the classroom, if any.
  • Assist in line up for dismissal, and be responsible to prepare materials, notes, and papers to go home.
  • Teachers' assistants work specific hours and should be punctual. Personal appearance should be in accordance with a professional atmosphere.
  • Should demonstrate Christian character qualities in and out of the classroom.
  • Work cooperatively with staff members.
  • Keep all personal information about students and families confidential. The assistant should never discuss a child with a parent without the teacher being present and leading the discussion.
  • Teacher assistants may be asked in the course of the school year to work hours outside their normal schedule to assist the teacher with events such as Open House, etc.
  • Assist teachers in closing up the classroom as needed during the week and at the end of the school year.
  • Required to attend weekly devotions if it is a scheduled workday.
  • Follow classroom procedures as described by teachers. Teachers may have different classroom procedures.
  • Staff children must follow classroom rules if they are in the classroom before or after school. The teacher has the prerogative to require assistant's children be sent to early bird care or to after-school care.
  • Adhere to all safety rules and regulations when supervising students in the classroom, on the playground, and elsewhere on campus.
  • Attend all All-Staff Mandatory Meetings and Monthly Staff Meetings (usually the first Tuesday of each month).
  • Read, understand, and implement all policies and procedures as presented in the staff/faculty handbook.
