Overview / Responsibilities

Wood Environment & Infrastructure (Wood E&IS) is recruiting a Civil Team Leader for our Carolina's based Civil Engineering team from our Wilmington or Durham offices.  This individual will be part of our Infrastructure Design Service Line that supports our industrial, municipal and NCDOT clientele.  The position relies heavily on a combination of leadership and technical qualities and has strong advancement potential.  As an engineering supervisor, you will set the bar of excellence for delivering a quality project on time and within budget.  You will be responsible for staff mentoring, setting career paths with staff, establishing the group's vision for growth and diversity.  In addition, you will be responsible to establish a technical procedure to serve our wide range of market sectors.  The successful candidate will have a strong desire to build and grow our talented professionals into thriving consultants. The team consists of 25 highly motivated professionals. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in team mentoring and be mentored
  • Establish succinct career paths for all staff for the Carolina's Civil Engineering team
  • Build on existing five (5) year vision for the team and take ownership of driving team success
  • Balance volume of work relative to number of staff (and deadlines) and adjust accordingly
  • Assist team with Business Development activities by 'Doing Good Work' and external sectors
  • Develop and review project approach and writing technical scope and fees
  • Be willing to develop key client relationships
  • Provide technical collaboration to all projects within the group
  • Remain a technical liaison for all civil work
  • Perform Independent Technical Review, on work performed by others, as a part of our Quality Control program
  • Reinforce corporate/office health and safety procedures
  • Know and understand various agencies of jurisdiction and associated rules and guidelines
  • Provide project leadership and orchestrating team efforts to execute a prescribed scope of work on time and within budget.
  • Various traditional Project Management functions (project metrics) and lead client meetings
Skills / Qualifications
  • B.S. in Civil Engineering
  • 10-15+ years of professional engineering experience, and a minimum of three years in a supervisory capacity
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in North Carolina
  • Demonstrated leadership in a team atmosphere
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills
  • Supervisory experience of, preferably, twenty (20) staff
  • Ability to establish team bench marking and strategically plan a vision for the group
  • Adhere to corporate/office standards for safety and quality of work
  • Ability to recognize a project's critical path and continually plan for project success
  • Experience preparing work scopes and draft proposals
  • Take ownership of civil engineering designs completed by the team as the Engineer of Record
  • Strong written/oral communication skills
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Working knowledge of common Civil Engineering software tools (e.g. AutoCAD, Civil 3D, SWMM, HEC-RAS, EPANET 2), although proficiency is not required
  • Familiarity with MicroStation and In Roads, although proficiency is not required
