Job description

Job Title: Civil Superintendent

Reports to: Project Manager

Compensation: $35-43/hr DOE

Travel: 100%

Spriggs Excavation is recruiting for a full-time, 100% travel position. This role requires continuous travel to project sites across multiple states based on business needs and project schedules. Employees in this position should expect to be assigned to one location for an extended period-such as several months at a time-before transitioning to another project in a different state. For example, an assignment may begin in Texas, then move to Colorado, and later transition to New Mexico. Flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to work wherever projects are located are essential requirements of this role.


Job Summary:

The Civil Superintendent will be responsible for all jobsite activities and safety related to SEI's scope of work on each project. The Civil Superintendent, with the support of the Project Manager, will oversee and coordinate all vendors and subcontractors and supervise all SEI staff assigned to the project. They will participate in planning, supervision, and all construction efforts to complete a successful project. The Civil Superintendent will facilitate professional relationships with all on site personnel including but not limited to; Client/Owner's, Vendor's, Subcontractors, and SEI staff. The Civil Superintendent will be a leader to their team and live by the SEI Core Values.


Supervisory responsibilities:

  • Supervise the work of assigned crew members, work schedules, project progress and resource allocation. Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations for SEI staff.
  • Handle complaints and grievances, disciplinary actions, and maintain production records for use in supervision.
  • Facilitates healthy relationships with Clients ensuring SEI team maintains professional relations with Owner, Engineer, and other members of the team.
  • This is a Full time Travel Position


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assure the proper operation and maintenance of equipment under SEI staff's control, including appropriate applications for the respective equipment.
  • Prior to commencing work activities, develop and execute an effective plan for each SEI crew member and their area of responsibility and determine the means and methods necessary (including individual work activities) to meet project goals.
  • Oversees all aspects of the construction project through completion.
  • Responsible for mobilization of necessary tools and other construction equipment.
  • Ensures all employees are conducting routine inspections and identifying and reporting needed maintenance or repairs on all SEI equipment.
  • Adheres to and enforces all safety rules, guidelines, codes and SEI policies.
  • Maintains project records including but not limited to; daily logs, T&M, manpower, and materials used.
  • Reviews all SEI staff timecards through Procore.
  • Assists Project Manager in maintaining the established budget and monitoring labor hours and production.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Oversee Crews and production on site
  • Crew sizes can vary from 5-50 crew members
  • Ensure projects/production are on schedule
  • Work with Clients on-site to ensure communication/partnership is kept between contractor and client

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Thorough understanding of practices involved in the use of various types of heavy equipment.
  • Thorough understanding of maintenance and basic repairs associated with heavy equipment.
  • Thorough understanding of safety rules and ability to safely operate machinery.
  • Superior skill operating assigned equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and delegate appropriately.
  • Experience with Global Positioning System (Topcon preferably)
  • Must have a valid driver's license and meet Fleet Policy requirements.
  • Ability to use good judgement and be an effective decision maker.
  • Experienced on all types of heavy equipment.
  • Proficiencyin spoken and written English is a mandatory requirement for this role, as it is essential for understanding work instructions, safety protocols, andparticipatingin team communications.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with at least five years of operating experience.
  • Workplace safety practices.
  • Vocational school training or apprenticeship preferred.
  • Valid Driver's license.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to travel with limited notice.
  • Prolonged periods of operating heavy machinery.
  • Able to work long periods including evenings and weekends when necessary.
  • Must be able to operate machinery in all weather conditions and terrains.
  • Must be able to lift 60 pounds at a time.
