The City of Fort Myers (approx. pop. 106,233), known as the "City of Palms," is located along Florida's beautiful southern Gulf Coast. The City serves as the cultural, governmental, and economic hub of the region and is the county seat of Lee County. The City has a Council/Manager form of government, with a Mayor and six Council members. The Mayor is elected citywide, and Council members are elected to 4-year terms by their respective Wards. The City is a full-service city with approximately 1,139 employees and an FY2026 total budget of $894.1 million, including a General Fund of $183.2 million and an annual CIP budget of $298.9 million.
The City Attorney is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the City Council and manages the activities of the City Attorney's Office, which has a total of nine (9) staff. The City Attorney's office serves as the legal advisor to the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, and all City departments, as well as to various boards and committees established by the Council.
Requirements include a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited college of law; and a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible legal experience, with five (5) years in government law, civil practice, and the supervision of other attorneys. Must be a licensed member of the Florida Bar in good standing, preferably certified in City, County, Local Government Law. Preferred candidates will have served as a city/county attorney or assistant in a community of similar complexities and will have experience in litigation and transactional law, as well as experience in areas such as growth management, land use, environmental, contractual, employment, historic preservation, and utilities.
