Job description

Description:

Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) is seeking a 1FTE (full-time) Anatomical or General Pathologist for Sturgeon Community Hospital (SCH). SCH is a 167 bed, acute care facility in St. Albert, located northwest of Edmonton, offering a range of acute and outpatient care including 24-hour emergency services, women's health, and a day surgery program. The successful candidate is required to have excellent skills in surgical pathology and cytology. It is expected that the successful applicant would participate in pathology resident teaching and supervision on occasion. There is opportunity to obtain clinical academic appointments at University of Alberta.

APL is a multi-site, province-wide laboratory organization providing comprehensive laboratory services and is an independent, but publicly funded organization that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Primary Care Alberta (PCA).

Job Summary & Responsibilities

Pathologist must maintain the highest possible standards of practice including prompt delivery of services to match established key performance indicators and provincial metrics, must actively participate in quality assurance and quality improvement programs, and must actively participate in undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate medical teaching. The successful applicant is expected to become an active zonal consultant in their area(s) of expertise. In addition to a sub-specialty practice, participation in general surgical pathology practice is required. 

Applicants shall possess a strong history of collegiality with co-workers, professional (academic and/or clinical diagnostic) accomplishments, and evidence of ongoing continued medical education. Responsibilities may include supervising technical staff, overseeing the laboratory quality assurance program, on-call requirements, clinical consultation with physicians, surgeons and oncologists.

Qualifications

Qualifications include a MD, eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta, and certification in Anatomic Pathology (Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology) or General Pathology (Diagnostic and Clinical Pathology) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate:

         Effective communication, skills in quality assurance, and operational efficiency

         Ability to work in a dynamic changing environment

         Ability to balance service and quality imperative in a resource-sensitive environment

         Ability to work collaboratively and be an overall team player
