What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Citizen Developer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Citizen Developer, you need a strong understanding of business processes, problem-solving abilities, and foundational knowledge of application development concepts, often gained through self-directed learning or formal training. Familiarity with low-code/no-code platforms such as Microsoft Power Apps, Salesforce, or AppSheet is typically required, and certifications in these platforms can be advantageous. Strong communication, collaboration, and project management skills will help you effectively translate end-user needs and work across departments. These competencies are important because Citizen Developers bridge the gap between business and IT, creating efficient, scalable solutions to real-world challenges.

Can I make 100k as a software developer?

A citizen developer typically creates applications using low-code or no-code platforms and usually earns less than professional software developers. Achieving a salary of 100k or more generally requires experience in traditional software development, coding skills, and working in roles that involve complex programming or enterprise-level projects. Salary levels vary based on location, experience, and industry, but citizen developers usually do not reach the 100k mark without transitioning into more advanced development roles.

What is a Citizen Developer job?

A Citizen Developer is a non-technical professional who creates software applications using low-code or no-code platforms. They help automate processes, improve workflows, and develop business solutions without requiring traditional programming skills. Citizen Developers typically work within business teams to address specific needs, increasing efficiency and reducing IT bottlenecks. Their role bridges the gap between business users and IT, empowering organizations to innovate faster.

What is the difference between a developer and a citizen developer?

A citizen developer is a non-IT professional who creates applications using low-code or no-code platforms, often without formal programming training. In contrast, a developer typically has technical skills in coding and software development, working with traditional programming languages and development environments. Citizen developers focus on rapid, simple solutions, while developers handle complex, scalable software projects.

What does a citizen developer do?

They typically focus on solving business problems, improving workflows, and enhancing productivity by building custom tools, often working within organizational guidelines and using platforms like Microsoft Power Apps or Salesforce Lightning. Their role complements IT teams by enabling rapid application development and digital transformation initiatives.

What are some common challenges faced by Citizen Developers in their day-to-day work?

Citizen Developers often encounter challenges such as balancing their primary business responsibilities with the demands of application development and ensuring they stay up-to-date with evolving platforms and tools. Navigating governance policies, security protocols, and collaborating effectively with IT professionals can also be demanding, especially when handling sensitive data or integrating with existing systems. However, these challenges foster valuable skills in cross-functional teamwork, problem-solving, and agile development. Overcoming them typically leads to stronger collaboration, greater impact within their organization, and enhanced opportunities for career growth in both business and technology tracks.

Job description

Job Summary

Vertiv is seeking a technically skilled and self-directed RPA / Test Automation Engineer to serve as the hands-on lead for robotic process automation and internal test automation capabilities within Vertiv's Digital organization. This individual contributor role is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining automation solutions using UiPath and Microsoft Power Automate as the primary RPA platforms, while also owning the development and evolution of Vertiv's internal test automation frameworks that support quality engineering across the SDLC. The RPA / Test Automation Engineer will operate the Digital organization and play a critical role in advancing Vertiv's Operational Excellence strategic priority by reducing manual effort, accelerating delivery cycles, and increasing process reliability across enterprise business functions.

As an individual contributor in a lead capacity, this role extends beyond hands-on delivery to include governance of Vertiv's automation capabilities and active support of the citizen developer community. The RPA / Test Automation Engineer will define and enforce automation standards, review and validate flows built by business citizen developers, and provide coaching, training, and enablement resources to expand automation adoption across the enterprise. This position partners closely with technology and business stakeholders to identify automation opportunities, prioritize the automation pipeline, and ensure that all automation solutions are scalable, secure, and aligned to Vertiv's enterprise architecture and compliance standards.

This position will be based onsite at Vertiv's Westerville, OH - HQ office location.

Responsibilities

  • Lead UiPath & Power Automate Delivery: Design, develop, test, and deploy end-to-end RPA solutions using UiPath and Microsoft Power Automate, including attended and unattended bots, orchestration configurations, and Power Platform flows that automate high-value business processes.
  • Own Internal Test Automation Frameworks: Build, maintain, and continuously improve Vertiv's internal test automation frameworks - including functional, regression, integration, and API-level test suites - ensuring alignment to SDLC standards and CI/CD pipeline integration.
  • Govern Automation Capabilities: Define and enforce automation development standards, best practices, naming conventions, error handling patterns, and reusability guidelines across all RPA and test automation assets.
  • Enable Citizen Developers: Coach, train, and support business citizen developers using UiPath StudioX and Power Automate, reviewing their automation for quality, security, and compliance before production deployment.
  • Identify and Prioritize Automation Opportunities: Collaborate with business process owners, IT, and Digital stakeholders to assess and prioritize automation candidates, conduct process discovery, and build a governed automation pipeline aligned to business value.
  • Integrate Automation into CI/CD Pipelines: Embed automated test execution into CI/CD workflows, ensuring quality gates are enforced without sacrificing delivery velocity, and contribute to shift-left testing practices across Digital delivery teams.
  • Monitor, Maintain, and Optimize: Proactively monitor deployed automations and test suites for failures, performance degradation, and coverage gaps; implement corrective actions and drive continuous improvement of automation maturity metrics.
  • Evaluate Emerging Automation Technologies: Stay current on advancements in RPA, AI-driven automation (e.g., UiPath Autopilot, Power Automate Copilot), and test tooling; provide recommendations for expanding Vertiv's automation capabilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent practical experience considered.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in automation engineering, quality assurance, or a related software engineering discipline.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with UiPath (Studio, Orchestrator, StudioX) and/or Microsoft Power Automate in an enterprise environment.
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining test automation frameworks (functional, regression, API, and/or integration testing).
  • Experience supporting or leading a citizen developer program or automation center of excellence (CoE) is strongly preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with UiPath (Orchestrator, attended/unattended automation) and/or Microsoft Power Automate (cloud flows, desktop flows, Power Platform ecosystem).
  • Hands-on experience with test automation tools and frameworks (e.g., Playwright, Selenium, Ruby-Cucumber, X-Ray/Zephyr, or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tooling (Jenkins, Gitlab, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or equivalent) for integrating automated test execution.
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language (Python, Ruby, JavaScript, or equivalent) for custom automation and framework development.
  • Experience with defect tracking and test management tools (Jira, ADO, X-Ray, or Zephyr).

Preferred Qualifications

  • UiPath Certified Professional (UiARD or equivalent) or Microsoft Power Platform certification (PL-200, PL-400, or equivalent).
  • Experience with AI-augmented automation features (UiPath Autopilot, Document Understanding, Power Automate Copilot).
  • Familiarity with RPA governance frameworks and automation CoE operating models.
  • Testing certifications such as ISTQB, CSTE, or CSQA.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum delivery environments with TDD or ATDD practices.
