About the Role:
The Senior Media Coordinator serves as a key member of the Earned Media team, leading day-to-day execution of the Lawyers' Committee's media relations efforts in close partnership with the Director of Earned Media. This role applies advanced media relations expertise, strong editorial judgment, and project management skills to elevate the organization's civil rights litigation, policy advocacy, and public engagement work.
The Senior Media Coordinator owns press inquiry management, drives proactive earned media outreach, and develops high-quality media materials that advance organizational priorities. Working cross-functionally with the digital team and executive leadership, this role ensures consistent, strategic messaging across platforms and serves as a trusted operational partner in advancing the organization's communications objectives.
What You'll be Doing:
Essential responsibilities of the Senior Media Coordinator include but are not limited to the following:
  • Own day-to-day management of incoming press inquiries, exercising sound judgment to ensure timely, accurate, and strategic responses.
  • Lead execution of proactive earned media outreach, including developing pitch strategies and cultivating strong, ongoing relationships with reporters.
  • Build, refine, and maintain targeted press lists using Cision or other media monitoring tools to support strategic outreach goals.
  • Coordinate and manage media requests end to end, including interview scheduling, logistics, and preparation of comprehensive briefing materials for spokespeople.
  • Play a central role in planning and executing media events, including press conferences, briefings, and rapid response initiatives.
  • Draft and edit press materials, including media advisories, statements, press releases, talking points, and op-eds.
  • Drive development and refinement of messaging for legal and policy initiatives in collaboration with the Director of Earned Media and the broader communications team.
  • Contribute original content to blog posts and website updates that reinforce earned media narratives and organizational storytelling.
  • Partner closely with the digital team to strategically amplify earned media placements across social and web platforms.
  • Analyze media performance and emerging trends, offering insights and recommendations to strengthen outreach approaches and messaging.
  • Maintain and continuously improve the organization's media database, press protocols, and documentation to ensure accuracy, consistency, and efficiency.
  • Prepare and brief executive leadership for media interviews by drafting talking points, background materials, and issue-specific guidance.
  • Serve as a core contributor to crisis communications and rapid response efforts, supporting timely and coordinated media engagement.

Minimum Requirements and Competencies:
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in media relations, press outreach, or strategic communications.
  • Strong understanding of the media landscape and experience engaging with journalists.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to craft compelling media narratives.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Experience with media monitoring tools (e.g., Cision, Meltwater) and knowledge of press outreach strategies.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, particularly in coordinating press logistics and tracking media engagement.
  • Self-starter with the ability to take initiative while maintaining collaboration with leadership.
