DEFINITION/SELECTION PROCESS THIS RECRUITMENT IS TO ESTABLISH AN ELIGIBILITY LIST FOR A CURRENT BUDGETED FULL-TIME VACANCY. Work Schedule: This position follows a Tuesday through Saturday schedule and is fully on-site at an assigned work location. Remote or hybrid work options are not available. Schedules are dependent upon operational needs and are subject to change.
This series specification describes two working-level technical job classes which, under general supervision, perform a variety of technical sub-professional and some clerical library duties, within well-defined standards in a variety of library areas; to assist the public in the use of a branch library and library equipment, facilities, materials and services; and to perform other specifically related work as required. The City of Lompoc is currently recruiting for the entry level position in this series, Library Assistant I. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: Library Assistant I - This is the entry-level class of the Library Assistant series.
This class is distinguished from the Library Assistant II by the performance of a variety of routine technical sub-professional library duties gained through on-the-job training and gradually receives responsibility for full range of duties, including assisting the public in the use of a branch library and library equipment, facilities, materials and services; performs some clerical duties; and performs other specifically related work as required. EXAMINATION PROCESS: Based upon screening of the City application, resume, and responses to supplemental questions, applicants whose qualifications best meet the requirements of the position will be invited to the examination process. This process may include, but is not limited to written examination, panel interview and/or performance examination, which consists of an evaluation of some of the essential knowledge, skills, abilities, and job-related experience listed below.
Those candidates who pass the examination process are placed on an eligibility list from which the final selection will be made. SELECTION PROCESS: As authorized by City policy, applicants being considered for hire in this position are subject to fingerprinting for purposes of investigating criminal history background, as part of the employment screening process. Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination (based upon job-related physical standards) by a City designated physician.
Failure in any one part of the examination or selection processes will disqualify a candidate from further consideration. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/EXAMPLES OF DUTIES The following duties are typical of this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Performs clerical and technical library work, including tasks in the areas of circulation and reference, acquisitions, and technical services. Opens and closes library in accordance with scheduled hours, circulating library materials, shelving materials, maintaining neatness and cleanliness of library. Assists patrons in the selection and location of materials, questions, policies, and concerns.
Assists patrons in the use of library facilities. Recommends library materials and services. Prepares and maintains displays and exhibits.
Plans, publicizes, and presents programs and activities, including story times and other children's programming. Assists library patrons at circulation desk and self-check kiosks, checking library materials in and out, maintaining circulation records and answering routine location questions. Issues library cards to patrons.
Answers questions via telephone, email, and social media means. Collects fines for damaged or lost materials, reconciles money received in cash registers and printers, and monitors safekeeping of all money. Attends training, assists with training new staff and volunteers.
Assists with donations. Searches shelves for books, and processes new library materials. Operates standard office equipment and assists members of the public in their use.
Performs a variety of general clerical and library duties specific to the department to which assigned. May be assigned to drive the Bookmobile. May be asked to cover shifts at other locations and outreach events.
Compiles use statistics and prepares reports. Creates presentations, newsletters, flyers, calendars, pages for the integrated library system, posts for social media, and other written and graphic documents as needed to publicize library resources and programs. Performs other related work as required.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position. The typical qualifying entrance background is one (1) year full-time library experience.
Experience working with an automated system for service delivery in a public library circulation area is desirable. Associate's degree or possession of a Certificate of Proficiency in Library Technology from an accredited institution highly desirable. License Required: Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License.
Knowledge of: Modern office equipment and procedures Basic computer uses and basic computer applications. English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation Basic mathematical skills; excellent customer service principles and practices Principles and procedures of recordkeeping. Ability to: Learn library services, functions and policies.
Learn and master the use of an Integrated Library System (ILS) Read and write at the level required for successful job performance. Type at a rate required for successful job performance. Patiently assist patrons with use of a library Operate modern office equipment and cash register.
Perform and maintain a wide variety of library-related records. Maintain discipline and order among patrons using a library. Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
