What are CHP plant operators?

CHP plant operators are professionals who manage and oversee the daily operations of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants. CHP plants, also known as cogeneration plants, simultaneously produce electricity and useful heat from the same energy source, increasing overall efficiency. Operators are responsible for monitoring equipment, maintaining safe working conditions, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring the plant runs efficiently to meet energy demands. They may also perform routine maintenance and keep detailed records of plant performance.

What is the difference between Chp Plant vs Power Plant Operator?

AspectChp PlantPower Plant Operator
CertificationsTypically requires HVAC, electrical, or mechanical certificationsRequires similar certifications, often including plant-specific licenses
Work EnvironmentIndoor and outdoor, often in industrial settingsIndoor control rooms and outdoor facilities
Industry UsageUsed in combined heat and power (CHP) plants for simultaneous heat and power generationOperates various power plants, including fossil fuel, nuclear, or renewable energy facilities

Chp Plant operators focus on managing combined heat and power systems, ensuring efficient energy production and heat recovery. Power Plant Operators oversee the overall operation of power generation facilities, maintaining equipment and ensuring continuous power supply. While both roles require technical certifications and involve similar environments, their specific responsibilities and plant types differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CHP Plant Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CHP (Combined Heat and Power) Plant Operator, you generally need a background in mechanical or electrical engineering, technical knowledge of power generation systems, and relevant vocational qualifications. Familiarity with SCADA systems, control panels, and maintenance management software is typically required, along with certifications such as BOAS (Boiler Operation Accreditation Scheme) or similar. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding operators apart. These capabilities ensure safe, efficient, and reliable plant operation, minimizing downtime and optimizing energy output.

What are some typical challenges faced by operators working in a CHP (Combined Heat and Power) plant, and how are they addressed?

Operators in a CHP plant often encounter challenges such as maintaining optimal efficiency, managing unexpected equipment issues, and ensuring compliance with strict safety and environmental regulations. Addressing these challenges requires strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and effective teamwork with maintenance and engineering staff to troubleshoot problems promptly. Regular training, adherence to preventive maintenance schedules, and proactive communication within the team are essential for smooth and safe plant operations.

Summary
At Liberty Coca-Cola Beverages (LCCB) we are seeking a plant operator for our new Quad Gen plant. The ideal candidate will have a deep commitment to safety and strive for excellence in all areas of their work. Experience with safely operating and troubleshooting process equipment such as pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, separators etc., as well as process instrumentation including level, pressure, and temperature transmitters, flow meters, and gas analyzers is preferred.
The Quad Gen plant produces 1) heat and 2) power (combined heat and power, or "CHP") plus provides 3) cooling, and 4) liquified CO2 to the LCCB facility. This Quad Gen plant will have two natural gas fired engines that produce electrical power and heat to be used in on-site processes. CO2 will be captured from a portion of the exhaust gas and liquefied and purified to meet beverage grade specifications.
Key Responsibilities
Plant Operations
  • Operate and monitor power generation equipment.
  • Control Quad Gen processes through DCS/SCADA systems to maintain stable operation.
  • Perform routine plant walkdowns (make rounds) to monitor equipment, recording operating parameters when applicable.
  • Start up, shut down, and adjust Quad Gen systems according to operational guidelines and specifications.
  • Transfer chemicals into and out of units (e.g., make-up amine, de-inventorying for maintenance, etc.).

CO2 Capture, Compression, and Liquefaction
  • Monitor absorber/regenerator performance, solvent quality, and circulation rates.
  • Monitor CO2 quality and adjust CO2 capture and purification equipment parameters to meet CO2 purity and rate specifications.
  • Operate CO2 compression systems, including intercooling and molecular sieve dehydration.
  • Respond to upsets such as solvent degradation, foaming, or unit turndown conditions.

  • Experience reading processes and technical drawings related to power generation facilities and / or chemical production facilities (i.e. P&IDs or circuit diagrams).
  • Safety driven mindset, with proficiency in the LOTO process.
  • Proficiency in communicating efficiently and thoroughly with team members, supervision / management, and external organizations under both normal (e.g., shift change) and emergency conditions.
  • Proficient in following operating procedures / guidelines, safety and environmental rules and regulations.

  • A commitment to good housekeeping (facility cleanliness and organization)

Additional requirements:
• Experience with or knowledge of amine gas sweetening and/or CO2 capture processes.
• Experience with or knowledge of refrigeration and CO2 liquefaction and storage processes including CO2 product purity analyses.
• Experience with or knowledge of molecular sieve dehydration systems.
• Experience as an operator or trade worker in a:
o Power generation facility OR
o Gas processing, refining, or chemical plant.
• Experience creating safe operating procedures for startup, normal operations, upset conditions, normal shutdowns, emergency shutdowns, etc.
• Associate's or technical degree in a mechanical or chemical trade, i.e. HVAC technician, laboratory technician.
• Ability to recognize and analyze changes in data trends to recommend corrective actions to avoid lengthy unplanned shutdowns.
