How much do chip design jobs pay per year?
What is a chip design?
A Chip Design job involves creating and developing semiconductor circuits used in electronic devices. Engineers in this field work on designing, verifying, and testing integrated circuits (ICs) to ensure performance, power efficiency, and reliability. They use specialized software tools for designing hardware and optimizing functionality. Chip designers collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring new processors, memory chips, or custom ASICs from concept to production. This role is crucial in industries like computing, telecommunications, and consumer electronics.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in chip design?
To excel in Chip Design, a strong background in electrical engineering, digital and analog circuit design, and semiconductor physics is typically required, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with electronic design automation (EDA) tools like Cadence, Synopsys, and Mentor Graphics, as well as proficiency in hardware description languages (HDLs) such as Verilog or VHDL, are standard prerequisites. Outstanding problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate closely with cross-functional teams set candidates apart. These competencies are essential for designing efficient, reliable integrated circuits and meeting the evolving needs of the semiconductor industry.
What are the typical career progression opportunities in chip design?
Chip Design offers a clear pathway for career growth, starting from entry-level positions such as Design Engineer or Verification Engineer and progressing to roles like Lead Designer, Project Manager, or Technical Architect. As you gain experience and demonstrate expertise, opportunities often open up in specialized areas such as physical design, timing analysis, or system architecture. Many professionals also advance to leadership or managerial positions, overseeing teams or entire design projects. Additionally, working in such a fast-evolving field keeps you engaged with the latest technologies and can provide options to transition into adjacent areas like product management or application engineering.

Keysight is a leading provider of advanced Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools for electronic communication and semiconductor manufacturers, chip designers, and R&D integrators. Our team of applications and technical support engineers work closely with customers to enable and debug their design flows as they use Keysight EDA software such as ADS, System Vue, GoldenGate, Genesys, IC-CAP, MBP, and MQA. Every day you will have the opportunity to impact the success of multiple customers as they work at the forefront of technology.
Responsibilities
We are looking for a customer-focused Application Engineer who is passionate about solving complex technical challenges and enabling customer success. In this role, you will partner with engineers across the Americas to help them fully leverage Keysight EDA tools, while delivering an exceptional support experience that builds trust, advocacy, and long-term relationships.

It is ideal for engineers who enjoy hands-on problem-solving while expanding their impact by working across a wide range of customer applications, industries, and design challenges.
Responsibilities
- Partner with customers to understand not just issues, but what customers are trying to achieve – their design goals, challenges, and workflows, and help them achieve success using Keysight EDA tools
- Apply strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills to systematically diagnose issues, identify root causes, and drive them through to resolution with ownership
- Deliver timely, high-quality support that drives customer confidence and delight
- Act as a customer advocate, ensuring feedback is clearly communicated and influences product and process improvements
- Identify opportunities to expand customer adoption and usage of Keysight solutions by understanding their evolving needs and guiding them to additional capabilities
- Collaborate across global cross-functional teams, leveraging collective expertise to solve problems more effectively
- Develop clear written and verbal communication, including customer interaction documentation, knowledge articles and technical guidance for customer self-service
- Create and deliver training content to help customers expand their capabilities with EDA tools
- Continuously learn and stay current with new tool features, technologies, and industry trends
- Manage multiple priorities effectively while maintaining strong attention to detail and follow-through
- Demonstrate agility and growth mindset by quickly learning and adopting new tools, including AI, to improve effectiveness
- Balance independent execution with strong collaboration, seeking help when needed, leveraging team expertise, and contributing to others’ success

- Customer-minded: You start with the customer’s perspective and are motivated to create positive, lasting experiences
- Curiosity & continuous learning: You ask questions, seek to understand deeply, and actively grow your knowledge
- Tenacity: You persist through complex challenges and stay committed to finding solutions
- Ownership & initiative: You take responsibility end-to-end and proactively drive progress without waiting to be asked
- Advocacy: You represent the customer’s voice and influence improvements across teams
- Collaborative mindset: You recognize that the best outcomes come from working with others and sharing expertise
- Clear communicator: You can simplify complex technical concepts for diverse audiences
