What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Chinese English Teacher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chinese English Teacher, you need strong proficiency in both English and Chinese, a teaching certification (such as TEFL or TESOL), and a solid understanding of language acquisition principles. Familiarity with digital teaching platforms, interactive whiteboards, and curriculum design software is often required. Excellent communication, cultural sensitivity, and adaptability help teachers connect with students and address diverse learning needs. These skills ensure effective language instruction, student engagement, and successful cross-cultural communication in the classroom.

What are some common challenges Chinese English teachers face when adapting lesson plans for different proficiency levels?

Chinese English teachers often encounter classes with students at varying English proficiency levels, which can make it challenging to design lessons that engage everyone. Adapting lesson plans to ensure that advanced students are challenged while beginners are not left behind requires flexibility, creativity, and strong classroom management skills. Teachers frequently use differentiated instruction, group work, and tailored activities to address these needs, collaborating closely with colleagues to share effective strategies. This approach not only benefits students but also helps teachers grow professionally by broadening their instructional techniques.

What is Chinese English teaching?

Chinese English teaching refers to the instruction of the English language to students in China, either by native or fluent English speakers. Teachers may work in public schools, private language institutes, or online platforms, helping learners improve their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. The job often involves lesson planning, classroom management, and adapting teaching methods to fit the students’ needs and cultural context. Many teachers are expatriates or local professionals with strong English proficiency, and the demand for qualified English teachers in China remains high.

Job description

About us
Our mission is to reinvent the way people learn, starting with language.
Learning a language can change a life by opening doors to new cultures, careers, and communities. Two billion people around the world are actively trying to learn a language, but the best way to learn (one-on-one tutoring) is hard to access at scale and hasn't been meaningfully improved in decades. Speak is building a human-level, AI-powered tutor in your pocket: a conversation-first experience that lets learners actually speak, get instant feedback, and progress through carefully designed lessons. The result is a complete path from beginner to confident speaker across multiple languages.
Speak first launched in South Korea in 2019, where Speak has now become the number one language learning app, and we now serve learners across many markets and 15+ languages. Speak is one of the world's leading AI companies, with over $150m raised in venture investment from OpenAI, Accel, Founders Fund, Khosla Ventures, and more, with a distributed team across San Francisco, Seoul, Tokyo, Taipei, and Ljubljana.
What are we casting for?
We are seeking actors to appear in our app-based video lessons as language teachers (watch the sample video below under each role for reference). In these video lessons, you'll be seated behind a table facing a camera and deliver pre-written scripts explaining language concepts and phrases for learners. While these lessons are not live, they are interactive. Scripts also contain questions to the user and a variety of responses based on their performance. When a user goes through a video lesson, the video recording of your teaching will play, along with opportunities for the app user to practice the language you are teaching.
Chinese teachers will act out bilingual scripts that teach English to speakers of Mandarin.
Notes:
  • Actors for this role must be bilingual in Mandarin and English.
  • Rather than a school-teacher, you will portray a professional perhaps in a different industry other than education, who is excited that their friend has decided to learn a new language (think helpful, friendly vibes rather than a strict teacher vibe).
  • We seek actors who have achieved and can successfully and consistently demonstrate native-like proficiency and accent in both Chinese and English, whether they are a native Mandarin speaker, a heritage Chinese speaker, or speak Chinese as a second language. Those who learned Mandarin in high school or college will not qualify.
  • We want the Mandarin to be delivered in a neutral Mandarin accent that appeals to global Mandarin speakers.
  • For native Mandarin speakers, having an accent in English to a certain degree is ok, as long as your delivery of English lines is very clear, fluent, and easily comprehensible by English speakers.
