Description:Museum Educator - Part-Time

Department: Programs & Education
Location: Bronx, NY
Employment Type: Part-Time
Compensation: $20 per hour
Schedule: Part-time; hours vary based on program and operational needs. Saturday availability is required. Shifts may be scheduled during regular Museum operating hours. Additional hours may be available based on program needs and employee availability.

About The Bronx Children's Museum

At the Bronx Children's Museum, we nurture the wonder of childhood, fostering curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning through interactive STEAM experiences that celebrate the diverse cultures of the Bronx. We're a place where kids and families come to play, explore, and discover together. Through hands-on exhibits, workshops, performances, and sensory friendly programming, we support how children naturally grow socially, emotionally, creatively, and academically while partnering with parents, caregivers, and educators to extend learning into everyday life.

Position Summary

The Museum Educator supports the Museum's mission by creating engaging, inclusive, and meaningful learning experiences for children and families. This position facilitates Arts and STEAM activities, supports museum programs and exhibits, assists with program operations, and helps create a welcoming environment for children, caregivers, educators, and community partners. The Museum Educator supports both in-museum programming; such as early childhood classes and field trips. They will also support outreach programming such as arts afterschool and STEM classes in local schools.

The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about working with children, comfortable engaging with diverse families and groups, and able to adapt activities to meet different ages, interests, and learning needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate and engage children and families in hands-on Arts and STEAM activities and programs in exhibits and classroom spaces.
  • Support inclusive and sensory-friendly learning experiences for children with diverse learning needs.
  • Assist with program setup, breakdown, cleanup, and organization of materials and supplies.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and accessible program and storage areas.
  • Provide a welcoming and positive experience for children, families, educators, and community partners.
  • Travel to and support outreach programs at schools and community locations within the Bronx, as assigned.
  • Support on-site field trips as Field Trip Leaders on weekdays.
  • Support our Visitor Services team as a cashier when assigned.
  • Represent the Bronx Children's Museum professionally in the community.
  • Follow Museum policies and procedures related to safety, visitor experience, and working with children.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding program needs, concerns, and operational matters.
  • Take on additional responsibilities appropriate to the position as needed.

Requirements:
  • At least two years of experience working with young children in a formal or community-based educational setting, such as schools, daycare, after-school programs, camps, museums, or youth programs. Babysitting experience alone does not typically meet this requirement.
  • H.S. or higher (AA or working on Bachelors).
  • Strong interest in children's education, learning, and development.
  • Ability to engage children and families in a warm, positive, and professional manner.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to multitask, work collaboratively, and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the Bronx Children's Museum.

Preferred:

  • Three or more years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in Arts, STEAM, museum education, informal learning, or community-based education.
  • Experience facilitating hands-on educational activities or group programs.
  • Experience supporting neurodivergent children and/or creating inclusive, sensory-responsive learning experiences.
  • Associate degree or coursework in education, arts, science, child development, museum education, or a related field.
  • Customer service or visitor-facing experience.
  • Bilingual or multilingual communication skills, particularly Spanish/English.
Schedule & Work Environment
  • This is a part-time position with hours varying according to program schedules and operational needs.
  • Saturday availability is required, as weekend programming is a core part of the Museum's operations.
  • Work hours generally align with the Museum's regular public operating hours. Employees are required to remain on-site after closing (typically 5:00 p.m.) to complete assigned closing duties, including program cleanup, breakdown, and organization of materials. Additional hours may be available based on program needs and employee availability.
