What does a chief mining engineer do?

A Chief Mining Engineer is responsible for overseeing all engineering aspects of a mining operation, ensuring safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance. They design and plan mining projects, optimize extraction methods, and supervise engineering teams. Additionally, they analyze geological data, manage budgets, and implement best practices to maximize productivity while minimizing environmental impact. Their role is critical in ensuring that mining operations run smoothly and safely while meeting production goals.

What are some of the main challenges a chief mining engineer faces in their day-to-day work?

Chief Mining Engineers often encounter challenges such as optimizing resource extraction while maintaining strict safety and environmental standards. They must balance production goals with regulatory compliance, manage large teams, and adjust plans in response to changing geological data or equipment limitations. Navigating complex stakeholder relationships—including with operations staff, environmental agencies, and company executives—is also a significant part of the role. Successfully meeting these challenges requires a combination of technical expertise, strong organizational skills, and proactive problem-solving.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the chief mining engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chief Mining Engineer, you need a robust background in mining engineering, project management, and mine safety, typically demonstrated through a bachelor's or master's degree in mining engineering and extensive industry experience. Familiarity with mining software (such as Surpac, MineSight, or Vulcan), proficiency in GIS systems, and relevant certifications (like Professional Engineer licensure) are commonly required. Strong leadership, strategic planning, and effective communication skills are especially valuable in managing multidisciplinary teams and complex projects. These capabilities are essential to ensure safe, efficient, and profitable mining operations that comply with regulations and business objectives.

Job description

About Jerritt Canyon
The Jerritt Canyon deposit was discovered in 1972, and the first gold production from the property occurred in 1981. The Jerritt Canyon property contains 30,821 hectares of mining claims located in the mining-friendly state of Nevada. First Majestic acquired the Jerritt Canyon Gold Mine from Sprott Mining Inc. on April 30, 2021. In May 2023, operations were suspended to prioritize exploration and technical studies. Jerritt Canyon is now entering a new phase of evaluation and planning, requiring substantial technical support to advance the work necessary for a potential future restart of operations.
