Job description

Are you an experienced fire service professional who can lead fire prevention, inspections, plan review, investigations, and community risk-reduction efforts while helping guide a growing municipal fire department? If so, apply to be the City of Portland’s next Assistant Fire Chief / Fire Marshal!

We’re looking for an exceptional, service-minded leader who is:

  • Experienced in fire prevention, inspections, plan review, and investigations
  • A thoughtful decision-maker with strong judgment, ethics, and integrity
  • A collaborative team player who builds productive relationships across departments and throughout the community

Located just across the Harbor Bridge from Corpus Christi, Portland is a thriving Gulf Coast community of approximately 20,800 residents. The community combines strong residential neighborhoods, award-winning schools, outstanding recreational amenities, and continued economic growth with an attractive coastal location.

The Portland Fire Department is an all-career department with 25 employees and operates regional HazMat and Technical Rescue teams serving a multi-county area. With continued community growth and a department operating budget of $3.6 million, the City is also planning for an additional fire station and second engine company.

The Assistant Fire Chief / Fire Marshal has primary responsibility for the City’s Fire Marshal functions, including fire prevention inspections, plan reviews, code compliance, and post-incident investigations. The successful candidate will also help improve inspection processes, expand fire prevention and community education efforts, build strong relationships with businesses and City departments, and support the department’s long-term staffing and service-delivery needs.

Required qualifications:
  • Associate’s degree
  • At least four years of related experience
  • Valid Class B Firefighter-exempt Texas driver’s license
  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection Firefighter and Inspector certifications
  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection Fire Investigator certification; Arson Investigator certification is also accepted
  • Current Texas Department of State Health Services EMT certification
  • U.S. citizenship and good moral character and integrity
  • Required certifications and licenses must be held at the time of application
  • A bachelor’s degree, plans examiner experience, and additional arson-related certification or experience are preferred.

The salary range for this position is $110,000 - $125,000 DOQ.
