Job description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Engineer at The Charleston Place to oversee the maintenance and operation of our hotel's facilities and equipment. The ideal candidate will ensure the safety, functionality, and efficiency of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and manage a team of maintenance technicians. The Chief Engineer will report to the Director of Engineering.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee the maintenance and repair of all hotel facilities, including guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house areas.

  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to ensure the ongoing safety and functionality of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.

  • Partner with the Director of Engineering to manage the budget for the engineering department, including forecasting and cost control measures.

  • Hire, train, and supervise a team of maintenance technicians, ensuring they have the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties effectively.

  • Coordinate with external contractors and vendors for specialized maintenance and repair work.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and safety standards, including OSHA and local building codes.

  • Respond promptly to guest requests and complaints related to maintenance issues, ensuring their satisfaction and comfort.

  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including work orders, inventory, and equipment manuals.

  • Stay updated with industry trends and best practices in engineering and maintenance management.

  • Prioritizes work and tasks for the department

  • Help to develop a world-class engineering team.

  • Know how to operate hand and power tools (drills, saws, drain cleaners, pressure washing equipment and a wide variety of meters and testers)

  • Read manufacturer instructions, blueprints, diagnostic trees and the ability to discern various colors of electrical wiring.

  • Make effective judgments on the various aspects of general repairs and maintenance and effectively solve guest and operational problems.

  • Operate software programs that control HVAC and monitor central plant

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related technical school degree preferred or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in hotel engineering or a similar role.

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, as well as building automation systems.

  • Minimum of 4 years of luxury hotel experience

  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage a team effectively.

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.

  • EPA Universal - required within 90 days

  • CPO- Required withing 90 days

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Must be able to work holidays and weekends.

  • Must be able to lift equipment, supplies, etc. of at least 30 pounds.

  • Must be able to resolve problems, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure.

  • Clear vision is important for reading reports, analyzing data, and overseeing Engineering activities.

  • Good hearing is necessary for effective communication with colleagues, guests, and stakeholders.
