Job description
SAFEWARE, INC.
Chief Digital and Technology Officer
Job Description
Enterprise Technology, Marketing, Ecommerce, and Modernization
Safeware is seeking a Chief Digital and Technology Officer to lead the company's next stage of growth and modernization. Reporting to the President and serving as a member of the C suite, this executive will lead enterprise technology, cybersecurity, data, digital platforms, marketing, and ecommerce. The role requires a leader who can maintain reliable day-to-day operations, build on the strengths of established leaders and teams, and create connected digital and technology capabilities that improve the customer journey, sales effectiveness, operational scale, and profitable growth.
Safeware is a sales led distributor serving government and public sector customers nationwide, primarily through cooperative purchasing contracts and other public sector contract vehicles. Continued growth creates an opportunity to connect and scale the company's marketing, ecommerce, customer data, and enterprise technology capabilities so employees can work more effectively, and customers can engage with Safeware more easily.Role ScopeThe Technology function has established a more stable day-to-day operating environment across infrastructure, internal support, cybersecurity, and core business systems. The next leader will be accountable for sustaining and strengthening this foundation while building a practical roadmap for modernization, integration, automation, and long-term scalability.
Marketing delivers a broad range of activities, including brand and content development, email, social media, collateral, trade shows, partner support, and field programs. The Chief Digital and Technology Officer will partner with the Director of Marketing and the team to build on this foundation, align priorities and investments with company growth objectives, strengthen coordination across channels, and increase the measurable contribution of marketing to customer engagement, demand, pipeline, and revenue.
The Director of Sales Enablement currently leads Safeware's ecommerce function. The Chief Digital and Technology Officer will provide executive leadership for ecommerce and strengthen coordination among Ecommerce, Marketing, Sales, Operations, and Technology. This leader will assess the current ecommerce strategy, operating model, capabilities, and performance; determine what should be sustained or improved; and establish the structure, priorities, and accountability required for scale.
The Manager of IT, Director of Marketing, and Director of Sales Enablement will report directly to this role, with responsibility for an additional 10 team members across Technology, Marketing, and Ecommerce. The Chief Digital and Technology Officer will build on their institutional knowledge and functional strengths, support continued leadership development, and establish clear decision rights that give each leader appropriate autonomy within an aligned enterprise strategy. The CDTO will create an environment where leaders are trusted to lead their functions, have access to the support and resources they need, and collaborate effectively across teams. Because Safeware does not maintain an internal software development organization, the role must also provide strong internal ownership of strategy, architecture, requirements, data, security, vendor selection, cost, quality, documentation, and delivery.Key ResponsibilitiesEnterprise Technology, Infrastructure, and Cybersecurity
- Develop and execute a multiyear enterprise technology roadmap aligned with growth, customer experience, operational scale, employee productivity, financial priorities, and risk management. In partnership with the Manager of IT and business owners, assess the current technology portfolio, identify opportunities to retain, optimize, integrate, replace, or retire capabilities, and translate priorities into business cases, resource plans, timelines, and measurable outcomes.
- Maintain the reliability of internal systems and infrastructure while improving service levels, uptime, user support, onboarding and offboarding, asset management, documentation, recurring issue reduction, and employee technology experience.
- Empower the Manager of IT to lead day-to-day Technology operations with clear priorities, appropriate decision authority, resources, and executive support. Support continued leadership growth while helping the Technology team strengthen service management, operational discipline, accountability, and professional development.
- Own cybersecurity, business continuity, and technology risk management across identity, access, multifactor authentication, endpoints, patching, monitoring, incident preparedness, employee awareness, vendor risk, data protection, backup, recovery, and operational resilience.
- Establish practical governance for enterprise architecture, data, technology standards, change management, and technology investment decisions.
- Lead managed service providers, systems integrators, cloud providers, cybersecurity partners, developers, and other vendors while managing technology budgets, contracts, forecasts, licenses, and investment plans. Establish clear requirements, milestones, contractual service levels, documentation, and accountability for cost, quality, delivery, and business outcomes.
- Create and execute an integrated architecture and modernization plan across the website, Ecommerce, ERP, CRM, marketing automation, reporting platforms, data sources, business applications, and external services.
- Establish the integration, data, security, and vendor foundation needed to support end-to-end customer journeys from digital discovery through ordering, service, communications, and analytics.
- Partner with Operations, Sales, Marketing, Ecommerce, Finance, and other business owners to define business requirements, customer and employee experience outcomes, process ownership, decision rights, and technical responsibilities for customer facing and internal platforms.
- Reduce disconnected systems, manual workarounds, duplicate entry, spreadsheet dependency, and inconsistent data through process redesign, improved workflows, integrations, APIs, data pipelines, and automation.
- Establish data governance, master data practices, ownership, definitions, quality standards, reporting standards, and access controls that create a trusted view of customers, contracts, products, opportunities, orders, service activity, and performance. Develop executive dashboards that connect customer experience, marketing, Ecommerce, sales pipeline, operational productivity, technology delivery, risk, and return on investment.
- Develop a practical and secure AI strategy and prioritize use cases that improve marketing effectiveness, customer insight, employee productivity, forecasting, and service delivery.
- Develop and execute a multiyear marketing and digital growth strategy aligned with revenue goals, customer segments, cooperative contract strategy, federal priorities, supplier partnerships, and market expansion.
- Partner with the Director of Marketing and team to review performance across brand, email, social media, content, collateral, trade shows, partner marketing, public relations, paid and owned channels, website, and field support. Build on what is working, identify opportunities to strengthen impact, and align future capability and investment with company priorities.
- Partner with the Director of Marketing to translate enterprise strategy into clear priorities and measurable outcomes while empowering the Director and team to lead day-to-day marketing planning and execution within their areas of responsibility.
- Represent Marketing at executive and enterprise levels, creating visibility into priorities, calendars, work in progress, resource needs, results, and lessons learned.
- Establish enterprise marketing direction and success measures in partnership with the Director of Marketing, while enabling the Director and team to determine how best to execute across brand, positioning, messaging, content, email, social media, public relations, paid media, search, video, partner marketing, and events.
- Build a disciplined demand generation engine that creates awareness, captures interest, nurtures prospects, and contributes qualified opportunities to the sales pipeline.
- Define and manage the marketing and sales funnel, including lead capture, scoring, nurture, marketing qualified lead and sales qualified lead criteria, handoffs, service expectations, pipeline progression, and closed loop feedback with Sales.
- Set website and digital experience strategy in partnership with the Director of Marketing and Director of Sales Enablement, including audience journeys, contract discovery, content, lead capture, ecommerce integration, testing, analytics, accessibility, and conversion optimization.
- Establish the marketing technology stack, segmentation, personalization, attribution, dashboards, reporting, and performance management needed to measure campaign effectiveness, funnel velocity, pipeline contribution, revenue influence, event return, and return on investment.
- Provide executive leadership for Ecommerce, working with the Director of Sales Enablement to confirm strategy, priorities, accountabilities, resources, and measures of success.
- Evaluate the ecommerce strategy, customer experience, operating model, content, platform capabilities, adoption, performance, and roadmap. Determine what should be maintained, improved, integrated, or reimagined to support customer and revenue goals.
- Create clear coordination among Ecommerce, Marketing, Sales, Operations, and Technology. Define decision rights and handoffs for campaigns, content, product and contract information, platform changes, order and service processes, customer data, and performance reporting.
- Clarify ownership for the activities required to operate and grow ecommerce, including customer experience, platform administration, content, product and contract information, adoption, support, analytics, and continuous improvement.
- Establish an operating cadence that moves ecommerce initiatives from concept to execution and measures adoption, usage, platform performance, conversion, revenue contribution, and business impact.
- Connect ecommerce traffic, conversion, account engagement, and revenue performance with Marketing, CRM, ERP, customer service, and sales activity to create a more complete view of the customer journey.
- Learn the strengths, capabilities, capacity, roles, and interdependencies across Technology, Marketing, and Ecommerce, then establish an operating model with clear decision rights that supports autonomy, collaboration, priorities, and scale.
- Create clear expectations and performance measures while giving leaders room to lead their functions. Provide regular feedback, development support, recognition, and meaningful growth opportunities for leaders and team members.
- Build on existing expertise and institutional knowledge while addressing future capability needs through development, role clarity, hiring, succession planning, or external partners as appropriate.
- Build an operating system that creates consistent execution through clear ownership, milestones, metrics, communication, and appropriate escalation across the functions.
- Lead people through transformation with clarity, empathy, transparency, optimism, and accountability. Be a visible and approachable leader who builds confidence, recognizes progress, communicates consistently, and preserves the relationships and culture that have made Safeware successful.
- Build bench strength and succession readiness across all functions, with leaders who can scale their teams and operate effectively as the company grows.
- Model the Safeware Way: Wisdom, Accountability, Relationships, and Excellence, across every team and interaction.
- Partner closely with the President, Operations, Sales, Accounting and Finance, HR, and other leaders to align marketing, ecommerce, data, digital, and technology investments with enterprise priorities and measurable outcomes.
- Lead cross functional initiatives with clear sponsorship, decision rights, requirements, ownership, milestones, dependencies, risks, communication, and accountability.
- Create an operating rhythm that connects customer experience, marketing performance, ecommerce, sales pipeline, customer data, digital platforms, enterprise systems, cybersecurity, and technology delivery.
- Present clear recommendations, tradeoffs, roadmaps, risks, financial implications, and progress updates to the C suite and other stakeholders.
