What does a chief data analytics do?

A Chief Data Analytics Officer (CDAO) is responsible for overseeing an organization's data strategy, analytics initiatives, and data-driven decision making. They lead teams that collect, analyze, and interpret data to support business goals and drive innovation. The CDAO ensures that data governance, quality, and privacy standards are met, while also promoting a data-centric culture across the company. Their work helps organizations leverage data assets to gain competitive advantage and improve performance.

Job description

Be Here. Be Great. Working for a leader in the insurance industry means opportunity for you. Great American Insurance Group's member companies are subsidiaries of American Financial Group. We combine a "small company" culture where your ideas will be heard with "big company" expertise to help you succeed. With over 30 specialty and property and casualty operations, there are always opportunities here to learn and grow.
At Great American, we value and recognize the benefits derived when people with different backgrounds and experiences work together to achieve business results. Our goal is to create a workplace where all employees feel included, empowered, and enabled to perform at their best.
We're hiring a senior leader to head Enterprise Analytics, responsible for descriptive and diagnostic analytics and business intelligence across Great American. We're looking for a leader with experience and vision at a pivotal moment when business intelligence is being reshaped by generative AI, someone who can help us transform thoughtfully while continuing to serve the day-to-day insight needs of a complex, diversified specialty insurer. The ideal leader will be forward-looking, operationally grounded, and deeply collaborative.
You will lead a team of 15-20 analysts and BI professionals, sit on the senior leadership team of Business Data & Analytics (BD&A), and serve as the thought leader to a federated community of 100+ analysts embedded across our divisions and shared services. The title - AVP or VP - will be calibrated to the right candidate. This role reports directly to the Chief Data & Analytics Officer.
Great American's culture is built on connection, shared learning, and strong relationships. To support this, employees in this role are expected to be on-site four days a week, with the flexibility to work one day remotely. Core in-office days are Tuesday-Thursday, with the fourth day determined by business needs.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop a team of 15-20 analytics and BI professionals.

  • Drive the vision for AI-enabled, conversational access to business data.

  • Lead change management efforts to prepare the organization for GenAI adoption.

  • Oversee and optimize the legacy reporting environment while managing transition efforts.

  • Balance current reporting needs with forward-looking analytics innovation.

  • Support and influence a federated community of 100+ analysts across the organization.

  • Collaborate with BD&A leaders to align with enterprise data and AI strategy.

  • Partner with business and technology stakeholders to deliver insight-driven value.

What success looks like
  • Evolve the team beyond delivering dashboards and reports to interpreting data and surfacing insights that move the business.

  • Empower the community of more than 100 analysts across Great American, federated and embedded in our divisions, so that they are supported, equipped, and connected to work that the Enterprise Analytics team leads.

  • Right-size investment in the legacy reporting environment without disrupting the business that depends on it.

  • Advance tangible progress toward conversational, AI-enabled access to structured data, with appropriate governance and organizational change management.

  • Peers in BD&A, business unit leadership, and technology view you as a partner who builds toward the shared picture.

Job Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree required. Post-graduate degree preferred.

  • 8-10+ yearsof progressive experience in data and analytics, business intelligence, insurance data, or a closely related field, including meaningful leadership experience.

  • Insurance industry experience is strongly preferred.Delivering value in this role means understanding the data in the context of our business.

  • Mastery of modern BI platformssuch as Tableau and Power BI. Familiarity with legacy platforms like Cognos is a plus, because part of this role is leading a thoughtful, multi-year transition to right-size investment/dependency on them.

  • Working fluency with cloud data platforms, Snowflake and Azure in particular, sufficient to partner credibly with our technology teams and shape the future-state architecture.

  • A genuine point of view on GenAI in the BI space, and the change-management experience to drive adoption, reshape skill sets, and prepare the workforce for what's coming.

  • Demonstrated executive presence and business fluency. This is a business role reporting through a business leadership chain. The leader must be comfortable in front of senior executives, succinctly communicate how data translates into decisions, and possess the ability to coach a team to do the same.

What this role is not
  • This is not a platform specialist role. We are seeking a business leader who works closely with technologists, not a technologist with a business title.
