Lead Residential Architectural Designer

Focus: Floor Plans, Layouts, and Elevations

Position Summary:

Were looking for a Lead Residential Architectural Designer with strong residential experience who can take ownership of our home designs and help drive the direction of our product.

This role goes beyond day-to-day design work. Youll be responsible for creating floor plans, layouts, and elevations, while also helping shape what we build across entire communities. Working under the direction of leadership, youll take the lead on laying out homes for new subdivisions, identifying what works best for each lot, and developing designs that fit the market, price point, and overall vision.

This is a fast-paced role where youll be moving between multiple projects, generating new ideas, refining designs based on feedback, and seeing your work move into construction.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design of residential floor plans, layouts, and elevations
  • Drive the layout and product direction for new subdivisions, including selecting and adapting plans for specific lots
  • Create new home designs and refine existing plans based on lot conditions, pricing targets, and buyer preferences
  • Produce clear, functional layouts that translate well into construction drawings
  • Work through multiple design iterations quickly while maintaining quality and attention to detail
  • Take direction from leadership and apply feedback efficiently while keeping projects moving
  • Collaborate with internal team members and partners to carry designs through to final plans
  • Review homes under construction and incorporate field feedback into future designs
  • Contribute to ongoing improvements to plan library and overall product offering

Qualifications and Experience:

Required Experience:
3+ years of hands-on experience designing residential homes (production or custom)
Proven experience creating floor plans and elevations that have been built in the field
Experience working on multiple homes or communities at once
Strong understanding of residential construction and how design decisions impact buildability

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in Revit or similar design software
Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD, Chief Architect, or similar drafting/design software
Ability to clearly communicate design intent through plans, layouts, and elevations
Comfortable working in a team workflow where designs are carried through to final construction documents

Professional Skills:

  • Strong design sense with attention to layout, proportion, and curb appeal
Able to move quickly between projects and handle a fast-paced workload
Creative and able to generate new ideas, not just modify existing plans
Able to take direction and apply feedback without slowing momentum
Organized and able to manage multiple projects at once
Clear communicator who works well with drafting, construction, and leadership teams

Education:

  • Degree or certification in Architecture, Drafting, or related field preferred, but not required

What Were Looking For:

  • Someone who can take ownership of the design side of our homes
Someone who can look at a subdivision and determine what products will work best
Someone who can generate new ideas while keeping designs practical and buildable
Someone who understands how homes actually get built and designs accordingly

What This Role Looks Like Day-to-Day:

  • Laying out plans and product for new communities
Designing and refining floor plans, layouts, and elevations
Adjusting homes for specific lots, budgets, and buyer needs
Collaborating with the team to improve and evolve designs
Seeing designs move into construction and improving them based on real-world feedback

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and field markups
Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach, and move throughout an office environment
May be asked to perform other related duties as assigned
