Chief Architect Drafting information

What does a chief architect drafting do?

A Chief Architect Drafting professional is responsible for leading the design and technical drafting process for construction or architectural projects. They oversee the creation of detailed architectural drawings and plans, ensuring accuracy and compliance with building codes and client requirements. Their role often includes managing a team of drafters, coordinating with architects and engineers, and reviewing designs for feasibility and quality. The Chief Architect Drafting serves as the main point of contact for technical drawing standards and often contributes to project planning and problem-solving.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a chief architect drafting?

To thrive as a Chief Architect Drafting professional, you need advanced expertise in architectural design, drafting principles, and a degree in architecture or a related field. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD, Revit, or Chief Architect), building codes, and industry-standard documentation tools is essential. Strong leadership, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help guide teams and collaborate with stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate, innovative designs and successful project delivery that meets client and regulatory requirements.

How does a chief architect drafting role typically collaborate with other departments during large-scale projects?

A Chief Architect Drafting professional frequently works cross-functionally with project managers, engineers, and construction teams to ensure that architectural plans are both technically sound and aligned with client expectations. Regular meetings and design reviews are common to address project requirements, resolve design challenges, and incorporate feedback from different stakeholders. This collaborative environment helps ensure that drafting deliverables support project milestones, comply with regulations, and integrate seamlessly with the work of other specialists. Strong communication and adaptability are key to effectively managing these interdisciplinary relationships.

Job description

Drafter – Residential Remodeling

About Us

J&J Contractors I LLC is a NARI award-winning, family-owned remodeling company focused on delivering high-quality interior and exterior residential projects. We run a structured operation and expect our team to execute at a high level.

Role Overview

The Drafter owns the front end of the job — turning client ideas and sales concepts into clear, buildable plans. This role is responsible for defining scope, building accurate documents, and setting projects up for production.

You will work directly with sales, clients, and project managers to make sure what gets designed can actually be built — on time, on budget, and without surprises.

Responsibilities

Scope & Design

  • Meet with clients and sales to gather requirements and lock in scope
  • Translate concepts into detailed construction drawings using Chief Architect
  • Build clear, complete scopes of work and contract documents
  • Ensure designs align with code, structure, and real-world build conditions

Pre-Construction Planning

  • Perform takeoffs and develop material lists
  • Define how the job gets built — sequencing, methods, and key details
  • Identify gaps, conflicts, or risks early and resolve them before production

Coordination

  • Work closely with project managers to ensure plans are executable
  • Support handoff to production with complete, accurate documentation
  • Meet with clients as needed to finalize plans and expectations

Control & Accuracy

  • Maintain clean, updated drawings and documentation
  • Support changes as needed while keeping scope aligned
  • Own the details — accuracy matters in this role

Expectations

  • Be organized and stay ahead — this role supports multiple active jobs
  • Communicate clearly with both clients and internal teams
  • Take ownership of your work — incomplete or unclear plans create problems downstream
  • Think through the build, not just the drawing

Availability

  • On-site
  • Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Flexibility as needed to hit deadlines

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred
  • Technical degree or equivalent field experience will be considered
  • 3- years of experience in drafting residential remodeling
  • Proficient in Chief Architect (required)
  • Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and sequencing
  • Experience with scopes, contracts, and pre-construction planning is a plus

What We’re Looking For

  • Detail-oriented and accurate
  • Strong problem solver — sees issues before they happen
  • Able to manage multiple projects without losing control
  • Comfortable working directly with clients and internal teams

This Role Is NOT For You If

  • You just want to draw — this role requires thinking through how things are actually built
  • You struggle with deadlines or managing multiple projects at once
  • You need constant direction — we expect ownership and follow-through
  • You are loose with details — small mistakes here create big problems in the field
  • You avoid communication with clients or internal teams
  • You are not comfortable being accountable for your work
