What is a chemical process simulation?

A Chemical Process Simulation job involves using computer models to design, optimize, and analyze chemical processes in industries such as oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing. Professionals in this role employ simulation software to predict process behavior, assess efficiency, and troubleshoot potential issues before implementation. They work closely with engineers and scientists to improve safety, reduce costs, and enhance overall process performance. Strong knowledge of thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, and software like Aspen Plus or HYSYS is often required for success in this field.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a chemical process simulation professional?

Professionals in Chemical Process Simulation often spend their days developing and validating process models using specialized simulation software, analyzing data to optimize process performance, and preparing detailed technical reports. They work closely with process engineers, project managers, and sometimes plant operators to ensure that simulation results align with real-world operations. Daily tasks may include troubleshooting process issues, making recommendations for design improvements, and supporting engineering projects from concept through to implementation. This collaborative and analytical environment offers a mix of independent technical work and team-based problem solving.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for chemical process simulation?

To excel in Chemical Process Simulation, you typically need a background in chemical engineering or a related field, strong analytical skills, and a good grasp of thermodynamics and process control. Familiarity with simulation software such as Aspen Plus, HYSYS, or CHEMCAD, and certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) can be important assets. Effective communication, problem-solving, and teamwork are valuable soft skills for this role. These capabilities are critical to accurately modeling processes, addressing technical challenges, and collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Corning is seeking a Staff Chemical Engineer to join our team in Corning, NY. This role is primarily onsite, with relocation assistance provided, and requires willingness to travel. Travel averages up to 50% annually, with fluctuations depending on project stage and business needs, and is primarily domestic with possible occasional international travel.

Chemistry plays a critical role in many of Corning's most advanced technologies. This role offers the opportunity to work across a wide variety of products, processes, and business areas where chemical engineering helps shape how materials are developed, scaled, improved, and supported in manufacturing. Depending on the project, the work may touch areas such as fiber optics, display and specialty glass, environmental technologies, Life Science Technologies, and other advanced materials applications. It is a strong fit for someone who enjoys technical variety, hands-on problem solving, and using chemical engineering fundamentals to help move ideas from development into real-world processes and products.  The successful candidate will contribute to process and product optimization initiatives, while performing rigorous process safety and hazard analyses (e.g., PHA/HAZOP) to ensure adherence to Corning's safety stewardship standards and environmental health and safety compliance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply chemical engineering principles to support the design, development, scale-up, and optimization of chemical processes and manufacturing technologies
  • Conduct hands-on experimentation in laboratory, pilot, and manufacturing settings to evaluate process concepts and support technology transfer
  • Use structured problem-solving methods to investigate process issues, identify root causes, and support resolution of manufacturing or chemical process upsets
  • Support process safety efforts, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance activities
  • Analyze and interpret technical data using statistical and experimental methods to improve process understanding and performance
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify technical challenges, evaluate solutions, and support project execution
