Job Description
The Environmental Services Trainee is responsible for protecting public health and the environment through inspection, monitoring, investigation, and enforcement of federal, state, and local environmental regulations. This role works across multiple programs including water quality, air pollution, solid waste, pesticides, hazardous materials, and public health nuisance complaints. The position involves field inspections, complaint response, interagency coordination, and public outreach to ensure compliance and mitigate environmental risks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct inspections, monitoring, and enforcement related to water pollution, safe drinking water systems, and recreational bathing waters
  • Investigate environmental complaints involving air pollution, noise, odors, solid waste, and illegal dumping
  • Perform compliance inspections for pesticide use, solid waste facilities, and regulated environmental sites
  • Respond to hazardous materials incidents and assist with environmental impact assessments
  • Participate in coastal water quality monitoring, harmful algal bloom investigations, and fish kill assessments
  • Coordinate with state agencies, local health departments, and the public to ensure regulatory compliance and public safety

Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in one of the following: Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences/Studies, Chemical Sciences or Biological Sciences; or in Environmental Planning, Environmental Policy, or Physical Geography; or in Civil Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Mining Engineering, Industrial Engineering or Bio-resource Engineering.
  • Must be on the Monmouth County HazMat Team
  • Must live within Monmouth County or within 10 driving miles of Monmouth County border
