What is a chemical engineer simulation?

Chemical Engineer Simulations involve using computer models and software to replicate chemical processes and systems in a virtual environment. These simulations help chemical engineers design, optimize, and troubleshoot chemical plants and processes without the need for costly physical experiments. By modeling reactions, fluid flows, heat transfer, and other variables, engineers can predict outcomes and improve efficiency and safety. Simulation is an essential tool in research, development, and industrial operations within chemical engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a chemical engineer simulation?

To thrive as a Chemical Engineer specializing in Simulation, you need a solid background in chemical engineering principles, process modeling, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation software like Aspen Plus, HYSYS, MATLAB, or COMSOL Multiphysics, and sometimes certification in these tools, is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication set exceptional professionals apart in this field. These abilities are crucial for accurately modeling complex processes, optimizing operations, and clearly conveying technical findings to multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by chemical engineers working in simulation roles, and how can they be addressed?

Chemical Engineers in simulation roles often encounter challenges such as integrating complex process data into simulation software, ensuring model accuracy, and keeping up with rapidly evolving digital tools. Collaborating closely with process engineers, operators, and IT specialists is essential to validate models and translate simulation results into actionable process improvements. Staying current with software updates and regularly participating in training or workshops can also help overcome technical hurdles and enhance simulation effectiveness.

What is the difference between Chemical Engineer Simulation vs Chemical Process Engineer?

AspectChemical Engineer SimulationChemical Process Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Chemical Engineering; proficiency in simulation softwareBachelor's or Master's in Chemical Engineering; focus on process design
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, software development, R&DManufacturing plants, process facilities
Industry UsageProcess modeling, optimization, simulation studiesProcess design, plant operation, troubleshooting

Both roles require a strong foundation in chemical engineering principles. Chemical Engineer Simulation focuses on using software to model and optimize processes, while Chemical Process Engineers work directly with plant operations and process design. Understanding these differences helps job seekers target the right roles in the industry.

AT Process Technologies (ATP) is a pioneering manufacturing company focused on the development and deployment of modular energetics production plants. Using breakthrough chemistry and automation that operates continuously and generates little to no waste, ATP is expanding energetics production to meet the munitions demands of the US and Allies safely, rapidly, and cost effectively.

Summary

We are seeking a chemical engineer to work on the piloting and scale-up of our energetics manufacturing . This role is at the center end of ATP's scaling plans: you will manage the critical process for detailed designs of our manufacturing facilities. Your task will be to design and execute experiments, complete engineering designs, and manage projects that de-risk scale up. This position is highly independent, hands-on, and involves hands-on pilot plant engineering work, simulation and design work, interfacing with external vendors and contractors, and managing our supply chain.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute critical pilot plant experiments generating reliable, actionable data for reaction and unit-operation design and scale-up.

  • Review and produce material and energy balances, block flow diagrams, P&ID drawing sets, for internal cost modeling and external equipment vendors

  • Interface with the mechanical engineering team to manage hardware design requirements for our pilot plant operations

  • Manage aspects of large-scale equipment procurement, raw material procurement, combining external negotiation with a knowledge of the technical and economic requirements

  • Lead HAZOP analyses with our process design and automation team to define safety SOPs and controls narratives

Required Qualifications

  • B.S., M.S., or PhD in Chemical Engineer, Process Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, or a similar field

  • 5+ years of professional experience in chemical engineering from pilot to production scale

  • High proficiency with chemical engineering practices: reaction engineering, simulation, material and energy balances, drafting and reviewing P&IDs, experience with chemical plant procurement and construction

  • Basic analytical chemistry experience (NMR, HPLC, GC-MS, FTIR)

  • Strong problem-solving skill

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with continuous-flow manufacturing

  • Prior experience developing with nitration chemistries, including hazardous or toxic material handling.

  • Prior experience with hazardous operations and safety reviews

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs

  • U.S. Person and ability to obtain a security clearance

  • Ability to work on-site and travel as needed

ITAR Requirements

This position requires access to information and technology protected under U.S. export control laws and regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). To conform to these regulations, applicants must be a "U.S. Person" as defined by 22 CFR § 120.62, which includes (i) U.S. citizens or nationals, (ii) U.S. lawful permanent residents (green card holders), (iii) refugees under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) asylees under 8 U.S.C. § 1158.
