Job description

Woodlands Market, Marin and San Francisco's premier gourmet grocery store, has an opening for a Deli & Cheese Supervisor!

Reporting to the Food Services leadership team, the Deli/Cheese Supervisor oversees and coordinates both the front-of-house customer service experience and the back-of-house food preparation for the Deli and Cheese departments. This role blends culinary production oversight with active retail merchandising, ensuring that team members deliver exceptional quality, maintain the esthetic purity of the retail cases, and strictly adhere to all sanitation and food safety guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

Culinary Production & Kitchen Operations (BOH)

  • Oversee and coordinate the daily activities of food preparation, cooking, and pantry personnel to ensure efficient kitchen workflow.
  • Taste, smell, and observe prepared food to ensure exceptional quality, consistency, and strict conformance with established recipes and appearance standards.
  • Assist in ordering, inventory control, proper storage, and distribution of products and kitchen supplies to minimize waste and control portion costs.
  • Help create and execute new menus, bringing innovation and creativity to the daily kitchen production.

Merchandising & Customer Service (FOH)

  • Maintain the esthetic purity of the deli and cheese cases at all times; this includes smoothing over areas where product was removed and ensuring meats and cheeses are faced toward the customer.
  • Prepare and deliver customer-specified sandwiches, sliced meats, and cheese items utilizing standardized selection methods.
  • Maintain a highly effective—positive, amicable, upbeat, and "smile first"—customer service orientation while answering customer questions.
  • Receive and accurately act upon deli phone orders as necessary.

Team Direction & Shift Leadership

  • Direct and supervise Food Service Team Members in daily retail sets, food production, and sanitary maintenance activities.
  • Train, mentor, and coach staff on product knowledge, food safety, best practices, and exceptional customer service.
  • Observe and enforce all opening and closing procedures, checking in with department leadership at the beginning and end of shifts.

Food Safety & Compliance

  • Implement and strictly maintain food safety standards, including proper food handling, temperature logs, and accurate product rotation/FIFO.
  • Enforce standard operating procedures for safety and cleanliness, including strict knife protocols, glove usage, and the prohibition of eating behind the counter.
  • Ensure proper and frequent cleaning of cutting equipment, deli cases, counters, and all prep areas.

Required Skills

  • Comprehensive understanding of professional food preparation, kitchen workflow, and knife handling skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of weights and measures.
  • Effective personnel management, supervision, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • High capacity to prioritize work and handle multiple, concurrent tasks in a fast-paced environment

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of 3 to 4 years of related culinary or deli experience.
