Overview of Steel City Academy


Steel City Academy is an A-rated, community embedded K-12 charter school that was designed in partnership with the community to offer a new narrative of what’s possible for the students and families of Gary. Managerial Structure 


The College and Career Coordinator will report directly to the Director of College and Career Readiness. 


Position Summary


The College and Career Coordinator position is established for the purpose of ensuring that our students at Steel City have access, the knowledge and the resources to pursue a post secondary pathway - college, trade school or the military- after graduation. 


Primary Responsibilities  include but are not limited to:


21st Century Scholar Program Enrollment and Supervision

  • Communicate with 21st Century Scholar representative to ensure proper contact information 
  • Confirm the current list of approved student with current enrollment 
  • Check the status of each student and progress monitor their targets 
  • Schedule a meeting with students and parents to discuss current status and identify action steps and benchmarks 
  • Create a plan to recruit and enroll current middle school students in the program 


High School Graduation Pathways

  • Complete individual student transcript audits in preparation of 1:1 senior graduation meetings with parents and students
  • Host 1:1 senior parent meetings to share updates, important deadlines and current status of graduation 
  • Meet with students for BOY, MOY and EOY credit and academic counseling meetings (9th-12th grade) 
  • Update the paper copy credit trackers for each student
  • Create schedules for beginning of year and make schedule revisions mid year based upon credit attainment 
  • Attend Standards of Success professional development to create a Steel City implementation plan 
  • Fulfill all transcript requests from Steel City alumni and parents 



College Admissions and Scholarships 

  • Partner with organizations to facilitate FAFSA workshops for students and parents
  • Track successful FAFSA completion 
  • Follow up with Naviance program to determine which components to use 
  • Lead Naviance sessions with students and support navigation of platform for successful college application document submission 
  • Connect students with scholarship opportunities and support successful completion of applications
  • Track senior college applications and acceptances
  • Celebrate and tell Steel City stories of college and post secondary pathway acceptance 



College Tours and Exposure Trips

  • Select college tour locations
  • Select student groups for tours
  • Coordinate college tour schedules
  • Create, distribute, and collect permission slips
  • Coordinate college representatives visits
  • Chaperone college tours



External and Community Partnerships

  • Engage Junior Achievement as a partner and schedule them to attend 
  • Establish and maintain relationship with TRIO 



Qualifications: Education and Prior Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • 2+ years of work experience in college and career counseling
  • Teaching experience preferred

  • Motivated and responsible for personal, team and organizational development.
  • Ability to manage several tasks and projects at once.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and flexibly in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to plan and manage multiple projects independently and collaboratively and also ability to manage up to effectively ensure key milestones are being met.
  • Strong numeracy and analytical skills.
  • Good judgment and sense of personal responsibility; exceptional maturity, professionalism, and ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and/or a propensity to learn new systems quickly.
  • Proficiency with Google sites and documents preferred.



Work Demands

  • Ability and willingness to travel occasionally for team conferences and overnight field trips when required
  • Working outside of typical school hours to ensure school mission, vision and expectations are met
  • Attend school and community events and functions 
  • Passes a criminal background check, as required by law
