What is a channel?

In a business context, a 'channel' refers to the means or route through which products or services are delivered from the manufacturer or service provider to the end customer. This can include direct sales, distributors, retailers, online platforms, or other intermediaries. Channels are crucial for expanding market reach, optimizing sales strategies, and building relationships with customers. Effective channel management can help companies maximize revenue and improve customer satisfaction.

What are the primary responsibilities of a channel manager and how do they typically collaborate with sales and marketing teams?

Channel Managers are responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with partner organizations to drive indirect sales. They work closely with both sales and marketing teams to create joint go-to-market strategies, provide partners with training and resources, and ensure alignment on targets and messaging. Collaboration often involves regular meetings, coordinating promotional campaigns, and analyzing partner performance to identify areas for improvement. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to manage multiple partnerships effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a channel manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Channel Manager, you need strong sales acumen, a solid understanding of partner relationship management, and a background in business or marketing. Experience with CRM platforms, partner portal systems, and sometimes certifications in sales or channel management tools are typically required. Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and problem-solving skills help you build and maintain successful partnerships. These competencies are vital for driving revenue growth and ensuring mutually beneficial relationships between your company and its channel partners.

About the job
As a Channel Manager, you will play a key role in executing Alfa Laval's channel strategy across capital equipment and service sales. You will work closely with sales, marketing, service leadership, and global stakeholders to strengthen channel partner capabilities, improve performance, and support sustainable commercial growth.
This role combines relationship management, business analysis, and operational execution to help optimize channel performance across multiple customer segments and territories. You will leverage data-driven insights, structured processes, and cross-functional collaboration to enhance partner engagement and drive strategic initiatives.
This is a hybrid position, with a preferred location of Richmond, VA. Candidates may also be based in Houston, TX; Greenwood, IN; or Kenosha, WI.
As a part of the team, you will:
  • Execute channel programs and initiatives that support business growth, partner success, and customer value.
  • Maintain channel plans, partner agreements, and territory roadmaps to support short-term objectives and long-term strategic goals.
  • Manage partner onboarding activities and coordinate ongoing communication to foster productive and collaborative relationships.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on channel performance metrics, providing actionable insights and recommendations.
  • Support incentive programs, performance reviews, and other channel governance activities.
  • Collaborate with sales teams to identify opportunities, improve channel effectiveness, and advance service sales initiatives.
  • Drive partner enablement efforts through training, product updates, digital tools, and continuous improvement programs.
  • Maintain accurate channel data, documentation, and CRM records to support effective decision-making and operational excellence.
  • Assist in identifying, evaluating, and developing new channel partner opportunities.

At Alfa Laval, we pride ourselves on creating an inclusive and dynamic workplace that values diverse perspectives and experiences. While we typically welcome applicants from all locations, currently, we are prioritizing candidates who reside in the US or have an established presence in the area. Visa sponsorship is not available for this role.
What you know:
You have a Bachelor's degree (preferred) in Business, Marketing, Engineering, or a related field, combined with relevant experience, and:
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in sales support, channel management, customer service, commercial operations, or a related field.
  • Experience in channel management, partner development, or sales leadership is highly valued.
  • Proficiency working with CRM systems, reporting tools, business analytics, and structured sales processes.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate data into meaningful business insights.
  • Excellent organization, prioritization, and follow-through skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and relationship-building skills with the ability to collaborate across functions and organizational levels.
  • Commercial acumen and an understanding of channel sales models and partner ecosystems.
  • A proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement, problem-solving, and delivering results.
  • Ability to travel domestically up to 20% as business needs require.

We care about diversity, inclusion and equity in our recruitment processes. We also believe behavioral traits can provide important insights into a candidate's fit to a role. To help us achieve this we apply Pymetrics assessments, and upon application you will be invited to play the assessment games.
