What is a CFR internship?

A CFR Internship is a program offered by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) that provides undergraduate and graduate students with hands-on experience in international relations, foreign policy research, and nonprofit administration. Interns work alongside CFR staff and experts, contributing to research, event planning, communications, and administrative tasks. These internships are highly competitive and are designed to give participants valuable insight into the field of international affairs while helping them develop professional skills relevant to their career goals.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a CFR internship?

During a CFR (Council on Foreign Relations) Internship, you can expect to work on a variety of projects such as conducting research for fellows, assisting with event coordination, drafting memos, and supporting social media or publications. Interns often collaborate with staff members on tasks that contribute directly to CFR’s ongoing work in foreign policy analysis and public education. This hands-on experience provides insight into both the day-to-day operations of a major think tank and the broader field of international relations. The environment is collaborative, with opportunities to attend meetings and interact with experts in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CFR intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CFR (Council on Foreign Relations) Intern, you generally need strong research, writing, and analytical skills, supported by academic coursework in international relations, political science, or related fields. Familiarity with databases, Microsoft Office Suite, and sometimes content management systems is typically expected. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and a proactive attitude are standout soft skills for this internship. These abilities are crucial for producing high-quality work, supporting policy research, and contributing effectively to a fast-paced, intellectually demanding environment.
