What is a CFO controller?

CFO Controllers are senior financial professionals who oversee the accounting operations of a company and ensure the integrity of financial reports. They often serve as the right hand to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), managing tasks like financial planning, budgeting, internal controls, and compliance. Their role bridges the gap between detailed financial management and broader strategic decision-making, helping organizations maintain financial health and meet regulatory requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CFO controller?

To thrive as a CFO Controller, you need extensive expertise in finance, accounting principles, budgeting, and financial analysis, usually supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in finance or accounting and often a CPA or CMA certification. Mastery of financial management software like SAP, Oracle, or QuickBooks, along with advanced Excel skills, is typically required. Strategic thinking, leadership, and strong communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with executive teams and guiding financial decision-making. These abilities ensure accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and effective fiscal management, which are critical for organizational success.

How do CFO controllers typically collaborate with other departments to ensure accurate financial reporting?

CFO Controllers work closely with various departments such as operations, sales, and HR to gather financial data, verify transactions, and ensure compliance with accounting standards. Effective collaboration is essential for creating accurate budgets, forecasts, and financial reports. They often lead or participate in cross-functional meetings to discuss financial performance, address discrepancies, and implement process improvements. Building strong relationships with department heads is key to streamlining information flow and maintaining financial integrity throughout the organization.

Job description

Chief Financial Officer

Brigham City, Utah | Full-Time | On-Site

Own the finance function. Help shape the future. See the impact of your work.

Elevate Credit Union is looking for a hands-on financial leader to serve as our next Chief Financial Officer. This opportunity may be especially appealing to an experienced Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, CFO, or comparable financial leader who has owned key financial functions and is ready for greater organizational influence, direct partnership with the CEO, and responsibility for the full finance function.

At Elevate, you will have a meaningful voice in the decisions shaping our future. You will see the results of your work, know the people affected by it, and help strengthen a growing credit union committed to making a positive difference in the lives of its members and employees.

The Opportunity

As CFO, you will take full ownership of the Credit Union's finance function and personally manage its core accounting and financial responsibilities. This is an executive position, but it is also a hands-on role for someone who enjoys working directly with the numbers, investigating discrepancies, solving problems, and seeing responsibilities through from beginning to end.

You will also serve as a trusted thought partner to the CEO by providing financial insight, evaluating options, asking thoughtful questions, and raising concerns constructively when decisions warrant a closer look.

Credit union experience is not required. We are looking for someone with a strong accounting foundation, sound judgment, integrity, curiosity, and a record of owning significant financial responsibilities. The right financial leader can learn our industry, systems, and regulatory requirements.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and perform accounting, month-end close, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Prepare financial statements, management reports, Board reports, and required regulatory financial reports.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and oversee general ledger activity, reconciliations, and the resolution of accounting issues.
  • Manage asset-liability activities, liquidity, investments, interest-rate risk, and CECL.
  • Chair the quarterly Asset Liability Management Committee and present financial information and recommendations.
  • Coordinate financial audits and regulatory examinations.
  • Manage accounts payable, tax reporting, loan participation accounting, and other key financial functions.
  • Provide financial analysis, recommendations, and strategic support to the CEO and leadership team.

What Success Requires

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Progressively responsible accounting or financial management experience, preferably in a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, CFO, or comparable role.
  • Direct ownership of financial statements, month-end close, budgeting, audits, general ledger functions, reconciliations, internal controls, and financial analysis.
  • The accounting depth and judgment to manage the finance function independently while learning credit-union-specific systems, reporting requirements, regulations, and practices.
  • Strong accounting knowledge and Excel skills.
  • The ability to research accounting issues, solve problems, manage competing priorities, and work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Sound judgment about which decisions can be handled independently and which have broader strategic, financial, regulatory, or organizational implications.

The Person We're Looking For

Integrity is essential.

You are dependable, organized, analytical, self-motivated, and attentive to detail. You take ownership, follow through, ask thoughtful questions, and remain curious when something is unfamiliar.

You are proactive and solution-focused. When something does not go as planned, you work to understand the issue, take responsibility, and help move the organization toward a solution.

You are comfortable working independently while remaining flexible and collaborative. You consider different perspectives, build productive working relationships, and support the broader team.

You also know how to balance candor with judgment, raising concerns thoughtfully and respectfully with an eye toward practical solutions and long-term success.

Why Elevate Credit Union?

Elevate Credit Union has served northern Utah since 1954. Today, we are a strong, well-capitalized, community-focused credit union with approximately 43 employees and three locations. We are proud of our history, confident in our future, and committed to serving our members for generations to come.

Our size creates the opportunity to know your coworkers, work directly with decision-makers, influence the direction of the organization, and see the impact of your contribution.

In addition to competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits, employees enjoy paid holidays, a paid day off for their birthday, and a 401(k) plan with an automatic 3% employer contribution, plus an additional employer match of up to 3%.

You will work closely with a CEO who understands the financial function and is looking for a capable partner. You will have room to contribute ideas, strengthen processes, and help plan for Elevate's future.

This is a full-time, on-site position located in Brigham City, Utah.

Elevate Credit Union is an equal opportunity employer.
