They often serve as the right hand to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), managing tasks like financial planning, budgeting, internal controls, and compliance. Their role bridges the gap between detailed financial management and broader strategic decision-making, helping organizations maintain financial health and meet regulatory requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CFO controller?

To thrive as a CFO Controller, you need extensive expertise in finance, accounting principles, budgeting, and financial analysis, usually supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in finance or accounting and often a CPA or CMA certification. • Prior P&L ownership and broad commercial acumen, with strengths in accounting, forecasting, budgeting, planning, resource allocation, and leadership development
  • Track record of managing banking relationships and structuring debt financing
  • Strong FP&A capability; able to build, review, and challenge financial models
  • Comfortable with commodity-based business dynamics and the associated risk management requirements
  • Operationally focused with the ability to be hands-on while also operating at a strategic level
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation
  • Creative problem-solver with the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analysis
  • BA in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline; Master's degree preferred
