Job description

Description
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) program director (PD) is a faculty member who holds an administrative appointment as an academic program leader within the School of Nursing (SON) in addition to other faculty responsibilities, including teaching, scholarship, service and practice consistent with the URSON's unification model. Responsibilities include oversight of program needs related to students, faculty, support staff, and/or administrative matters. The PD is primarily responsible for strategic planning and the academic program in response to emerging trends in health profession education and evolving workforce needs. In collaboration with the senior associate dean for graduate education, the program director works closely with specialty directors for the adult-gero acute care, adult-gero primary care, family, pediatric primary care/neonatal, pediatric acute care and psychiatric mental health (lifespan) assuming primary responsibility for curriculum oversight, including ongoing curriculum review/revision, curriculum innovation, and evaluation of student and faculty performance within their program. The PD supports ongoing faculty development and works closely with the associate dean to assign annual faculty workload. The PD regularly collaborates with admissions and student affairs leaders related to enrollment management and student support services. The PD assists the senior associate dean with recruiting faculty that support the mission of the SON. The PD consistently demonstrates MELIORA and ICARE values and fosters an inclusive, equitable, and supportive work environment. The PD engages with academic and practice program partners to support precepted clinical learning experiences, participates in professional associations, and engages with communities of interest to promote the program's visibility and stature.
Responsibilities and Qualifications include but are not limited to the following:
Provides leadership to the academic program to articulate and support the goals of the program, SON, and university with an emphasis on the quality of the learning environment:
  • Interprets the policies of the SON and university and translates these policies into proposed actions for the program(s).
  • Initiates an annual review, development, and assessment of program goals.
  • In collaboration with the senior associate dean, represents the program and program faculty within the SON and URMC and maintains effective, collegial relationships with other SON and URMC programs & departments.
  • Creates and fosters an academic program climate that facilitates student, faculty, and staff engagement.
  • Encourages scholarly activities for program faculty.
  • Advocates for service to the SON, university, and the local community.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Equity and Inclusion, leads the academic program in the articulation, measurement, and fulfillment of SON DEI goals.

Provides leadership to curricular and co-curricular academic activities of the program to create an outstanding academic program:
  • In collaboration with all academic program leaders, coordinates the development, implementation, and ongoing assessment of program curricula, including advanced certificate programs and university collaborative programs.
  • Guides a formal review of the program curriculum in accordance with SON systematic evaluation plan (SEP). completes annual NYSED reports and annual program reports
  • Reviews CEs and TEs at both the individual and program faculty level and makes curricular and operational changes as necessary.
  • Reviews current course syllabi to ensure adherence to SON and accreditation standards.
  • Encourages the development of new courses, experiential learning opportunities, and programs, as appropriate.
  • In collaboration with all academic program leaders, coordinates outcome measurements for the nursing programs.
  • Monitors, reports, and develops necessary action plans for program certification and licensure outcomes.
  • Assists senior associate dean and Director of Business Administration with faculty teaching and course assignments in collaboration with faculty.
  • Communicates regularly with students and uses student input to shape the policies and procedures of the department.

Assessment and accreditation program leadership;
  • Collaborates with all academic leaders, plans, implements, and evaluates all program assessment activities.
  • In collaboration with all academic program leaders, coordinates outcome measurements for the graduate nursing program in accordance with the SON Systematic Evaluation (SEP), ongoing program review, and internal and external accreditation and assessment requirements (e.g., Middle States, CCNE, NYSED, and program-relevant professional requirements).
  • In collaboration with the senior associate dean ensures individual academic programs meet accreditation standards and prepares required SON, university, and accreditation reports.

Experiential learning and clinical placement leadership
  • Coordinates in collaboration with course faculty, to identify new opportunities for clinical and student teaching placements in accordance with licensure, certification, and accreditation requirements.
  • Oversees experiential learning faculty, clinical site and preceptor administrator, and staff regarding all clinical and student teaching placements, including communication with preceptors, course faculty, and affiliating agencies, development of processes to assure student and preceptor compliance, adherence to specialty licensure and certification requirements and documentation in the SON longitudinal clinical education tracking database (SONNET).
  • Coordinates in collaboration with program faculty, new preceptor orientation to SON and specific courses.
  • Coordinates in collaboration with clinical faculty/experiential learning faculty and staff, formal preceptor recognition

Participates in the financial operations of the academic program, assuring fiscal responsibility to the SON:
  • Identifies operating and capital resource needs to ensure program and SON goals attainment, reviews resources annually, and provides input to the senior associate dean for graduate education of any new program needs.

Provides leadership for program recruitment, enrollment, advising, and progression activities to meet program enrollment and goals and assure an excellent student experience:
Recruitment and Enrollment
  • Collaborates with the SON marketing and communications team in the development and revision of program materials for internal and external SON communications.
  • In collaboration with all academic leaders, coordinates, participates in, and evaluates the effectiveness of all aspects of the graduate nursing programs to ensure an efficient and excellent student experience.
  • In conjunction with the senior associate dean for graduate education, associate dean for enrollment management and student affairs, and director of admissions and enrollment management team, establish criteria for admissions and applicant review processes.
  • Represents the program and participates in the marketing and recruitment efforts for the nursing program, including both onsite and offsite events.
  • Coordinates, in collaboration with SON Student Affairs Office and other programs, when appropriate, new student orientation.

Student Advisement:
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates, in collaboration with senior associate dean for graduate education, student affairs staff, and program faculty, student-centered pedagogies and evidence-based student advising practices.
  • Serves as a resource and role model to program faculty regarding student advising.

Student Registration and Progression:
  • Collaborates with SON registrar in the maintenance and audits of student records in SONDB and UR Student information system.
  • Assists students with academic progression inquiries and resolution of issues.
  • Collaborates with program faculty to formally assess student competencies.
  • Ensure students complete the requirements for graduation, licensure, certification, and accreditation.

Provides leadership to program faculty and staff to create a collaborative, engaging, and satisfying work environment:
  • Provides faculty development opportunities and supports teaching, scholarship, and service priorities.
  • Updates program faculty and staff through monthly faculty meetings.
  • Regularly solicits program feedback from faculty and staff.
  • Solicits, as needed, feedback from program faculty on self-performance and opportunities for improvement.
  • Interacts with each faculty member to create a professional development plan consistent with fiscal constraints and assists in the execution of these plans, as appropriate.
  • Encourages and reinforces collegiality and adjudicates disputes within the program as necessary.
  • Recommends an appropriate mentor for new faculty and academic instructional support staff.
  • Collaborates with SON administration to assign faculty and staff space to meet departmental needs.
  • Encourage awareness and implementation of safety practices in the operation of the department, including compliance with all relevant regulations.
  • Under the direction of the associate dean, demonstrates and utilizes a thorough understanding of appropriate personnel management practices and policies, including those stipulated by federal statutes, codes, and regulations; the statutes of the State of New York; UR, and community partner guidelines.
  • Provides ongoing feedback to program faculty in accordance with SON and university guidelines.
  • Collaborates with SON educational administrator, monitors staff performance and program support.
  • Coordinates orientation of full-time, part-time, and session program faculty.
  • Supports course faculty regarding student concerns and issues, including follow-up.
  • Identifies opportunities for developing and disseminating academic scholarship (e.g., abstracts, manuscripts, podium, poster presentations).

Other Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Participates in local and national organizations to ensure program excellence and appropriateness of the curriculum and instruction.
  • Serves on SON, university/hospital/nursing practice and community partner committees/boards, as appropriate.
  • Monitors a changing healthcare delivery system and advises SON senior leadership of changing trends and their potential impact on student enrollment, instruction, curriculum design, and clinical education.
  • Maintains negotiated teaching assignments within the program.
  • Meets other teaching requirements outlined in faculty-level position descriptions.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the dean, and senior associate dean for graduate education.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree with national specialty certification.
  • Exceptional leadership skills, including the ability to work effectively within a team comprised of faculty, senior leadership, staff, practice and community partners, and students.
  • Demonstrated record of successful leadership in academic or clinical practice.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and implement accreditation criteria and state regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide support and mentorship as an advocate for change and new ideas.
  • Requisite degree and credentials for the designated academic program.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior academic leadership experience.
  • Prior teaching experience at the graduate program level as appropriate.
  • Experience in online teaching and learning pedagogies.
  • Experience with professional nursing education, education technology, program development, and project management.
  • Proficiency with Blackboard LMS.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Proficiency with Apple IOS products, as appropriate.
