Job Summary:
The Registered Nurse in Oncology provides specialized nursing care focused on the administration and management of chemotherapy and related treatments in an acute care hospital setting. This role involves patient assessment, medication administration including chemotherapy and IV therapies, monitoring patient response, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to ensure high-quality patient care. The nurse will work primarily day shifts, with weekend coverage every other week, and must have at least one year of relevant experience.
Responsibilities:
- Administer chemotherapy including continuous infusion, IV push, and oral chemotherapy medications.
- Handle and manage body fluids and cytotoxic spills safely following established protocols.
- Access and care for ports, PICC lines, central lines, and implanted lines; perform central line blood draws.
- Administer blood and blood products, coagulation factors, antifungals, and antivirals as prescribed.
- Monitor patients for adverse reactions and abnormal lab values related to chemotherapy and IV therapies.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to develop and implement patient care plans.
- Document patient care and treatment accurately using Cerner electronic medical records.
- Provide patient education regarding chemotherapy treatment and side effect management.
- Float within scope as needed to meet facility staffing requirements.
Required Skills & Certifications:
- Active Registered Nurse license in Illinois or in application process.
- Chemotherapy certification and demonstrated experience administering chemotherapy.
- IV therapy and infusion skills including port and central line care.
- Minimum of 1 year nursing experience, oncology experience preferred but first-time oncology nurses accepted.
- Strong clinical assessment and medication administration skills.
- Ability to recognize and communicate abnormal lab values related to oncology care.
Preferred Skills & Certifications:
- Experience in an acute care magnet hospital or Level I trauma center environment.
- Previous experience with Cerner electronic health record system.
- Additional certifications related to oncology nursing or critical care.
Special Considerations:
- No on-call requirements.
- Floating to other units within scope as needed.
- Must adhere to facility policies regarding chemotherapy safety and body fluid handling.
- Parking permit required but provided at no cost.
- Scrub color can be any solid color.
- Return to office restrictions ideally limited to no more than 5 days.
- Client may cancel up to 36 hours per thirteen-week assignment without pay; on-call shifts count as called-off if not worked.
Scheduling:
- 3 twelve-hour day shifts per week, typically 7:15 AM to 6:45 PM.
- Work every other weekend.
- Block schedule requests may be discussed with manager.
