Job description

Job Title: PhlebotomistJob Description

The Phlebotomist collects blood and other specimens from patients of all age groups using a variety of procedures, prepares and packages samples for laboratory testing, and supports additional laboratory processes as needed. This role requires strong technical phlebotomy skills, a solid understanding of compliance and safety standards, and the ability to work efficiently in both inpatient and outpatient settings, with a particular focus on pediatric patients.

Responsibilities
  • Perform blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques for patients across all age groups, including infants, children, adolescents, adults, and older adults.
  • Conduct pediatric blood collections, including infant and neonatal draws, in a safe, compassionate, and efficient manner.
  • Handle difficult draws, including patients in medical office buildings and other challenging clinical situations, while maintaining patient comfort and safety.
  • Review test orders carefully to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to specimen collection.
  • Draw blood samples and other required specimens according to established protocols and laboratory standards.
  • Process specimens, including labeling, handling, and preparing samples for laboratory testing, in accordance with compliance and safety requirements.
  • Package specimens correctly for transport to the laboratory, ensuring integrity and traceability of all samples.
  • Use laboratory information systems (such as Cerner or similar systems) to register, track, and document specimens and test orders.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with patients, families, and clinical staff to provide excellent customer service and explain procedures when needed.
  • Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety regulations, and effectively communicate the importance of these standards to other employees.
  • Provide orientation and training to patient service technicians, sharing best practices and reinforcing quality and safety protocols.
  • Maintain high productivity in outpatient settings by drawing approximately 45–55 patients within an 8-hour shift.
  • Maintain high productivity in inpatient hospital settings by drawing approximately 20–30 patients within an 8-hour shift.
  • Demonstrate consistent, reliable attendance and professional behavior to support dependable patient care and laboratory operations.
  • Collaborate with the lab supervisor and team lead while working with pediatric patients, following guidance and established procedures.
  • Assist with additional laboratory duties as needed, which may include helping with specimen processing during training or regular shifts.
  • Follow facility policies and procedures at all times, including those related to quality assurance, infection control, and patient confidentiality.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current CPT-1 license or equivalent phlebotomy certification.
  • At least six months of experience in an acute or sub-acute setting, with a preference for one year of experience.
  • Experience with infant and neonatal blood draws.
  • Experience working with pediatric patients.
  • Prior outpatient laboratory experience (such as large reference lab environments) with high patient draw volumes.
  • Inpatient hospital phlebotomy experience is a plus.
  • Comfort working in both acute and sub-acute care environments.
  • Computer literacy and ability to navigate and use laboratory information systems efficiently.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen labeling and documentation.
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of patient care, safety, and confidentiality.

Work Environment

This position is primarily scheduled on a PM shift from 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and may initially be on an on-call basis, with the nature of the assignment subject to change over time. The role supports coverage for leaves of absence and vacations, requiring flexibility and reliability. Training is provided with full-time hours to help you acclimate to the facility, and you may assist with specimen processing as you become familiar with workflows. Schedules are provided two weeks in advance to support work-life planning. The work takes place in a clinical laboratory environment that includes both inpatient and outpatient settings, with the use of laboratory information systems such as Cerner or similar platforms, and standard phlebotomy and specimen processing equipment. The pace is fast, with high patient volumes and a strong focus on safety, accuracy, and patient experience. The required dress code for this role is red scrubs.

This is a Contract position based out of San Bernardino, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $26.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
