What is Central Casting?

Central Casting is a well-known casting company that specializes in providing background actors, also known as extras, for film, television, and commercials. Established in 1925, Central Casting is one of the largest and most recognized casting agencies in the United States, with offices in Los Angeles, New York, and other major cities. They handle the registration, booking, and payroll for thousands of background actors and are often the first point of contact for those starting out in the entertainment industry. Central Casting works closely with major studios and production companies to provide a wide range of talent for various projects.

What is the difference between Central Casting vs Casting Director?

AspectCentral CastingCasting Director
CredentialsNo formal certification required, industry experience preferredExperience in casting, industry connections, sometimes industry-specific training
Work EnvironmentLarge casting facilities, background work, supporting rolesOffice settings, on-location shoots, client meetings
Employer & Industry UsageMajor studios, production companies, background casting agenciesFilm, TV, commercials, independent productions
Search & Comparison IntentBackground casting, talent support rolesLead talent selection, main roles casting

Central Casting primarily handles background and supporting roles, focusing on large-scale productions and background talent. Casting Directors are responsible for selecting actors for principal roles, working closely with producers and directors. While both roles involve casting, Central Casting is more about supporting background work, whereas Casting Directors manage the main talent selection process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Central Casting Casting Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Central Casting Casting Assistant, you typically need a strong understanding of the casting process, organizational skills, and familiarity with industry standards, often supported by experience or education in film, television, or theater. Proficiency with casting databases, scheduling software, and office suite tools is commonly required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work well under pressure are valuable soft skills in this fast-paced environment. These skills ensure smooth casting operations, accurate talent coordination, and efficient support for casting directors and production teams.

What are some common challenges faced by background actors working with Central Casting, and how can they be managed?

Background actors registered with Central Casting often face challenges such as unpredictable work schedules, long hours on set, and last-minute calls for availability. Managing these challenges requires flexibility, good communication with casting coordinators, and careful planning of personal commitments. Staying organized, remaining professional, and promptly responding to casting notices can help maximize opportunities and build a positive reputation within the industry.
