Job description

Associate Director United Nations University (HEA) - Dean of Engineering

POSITION DETAILS

In close coordination with the Executive Co-Directors of the UNU Hub (R-SIRUS), the Academic Resources Center Manager will lead efforts to position the Hub as a global leader in applied research, education, and policy engagement focused on resilient, sustainable, and inclusive urban systems. This role combines high-level operational leadership with externally focused strategic development. It is a critical position designed to expand R-SIRUS’s impact through targeted partnerships, high-profile initiatives, and aligned academic programming.

Reporting to the Dean of the Grove School of Engineering, the Associate Director United Nations responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a spokesperson for R‑SIRUS and establish collaborations and partnerships with UN officials, other UNU Hubs and Institutes, government agencies, global universities, and leading research organizations.

  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to urban resilience, climate change, and water and energy management.

  • Serve as a key liaison between UNU-INWEH and the UNU Hub at City College by co‑leading collaborative research, outreach, and capacity‑building activities, and contributing to UN flagship reports and policy documents.

  • Develop mentoring and internship pathways for CCNY master’s and PhD students within the United Nations system and other strategic partner organizations.

  • Identify and secure funding through national and international grants, philanthropic partnerships, and multilateral organizations; coordinate proposal development efforts with CCNY faculty and external collaborators.

  • Facilitate and expand high‑impact educational experiences for CCNY undergraduate and graduate students, including mentorships, internships, and project‑based partnerships across the UN system and affiliated institutions.

  • Support the integration of UNU research themes into Grove School of Engineering curricula, seminars, and workshops to enhance CCNY’s global engagement and academic distinction.

  • Lead strategic communications and visibility initiatives to position the Hub and the Grove School of Engineering as central contributors to international research and policy networks.

  • Coordinate publications, policy briefings, and symposia targeting city, national, and global policymakers to translate research into measurable policy impact.

  • Provide publishing guidance, editorial oversight, and technical review to ensure that UNU Hub research is disseminated in high‑impact journals.

  • Expand and coordinate efforts to translate research into policy through structured engagement and information sharing with policymakers at all levels.

  • Oversee internal operations of R‑SIRUS, including coordination across research pillars, stakeholder engagement, administrative management, and quality assurance of deliverables.

  • Conduct regular reviews of Hub commitments and performance to ensure compliance with UNU quality standards and strategic objectives.

  • Convene and coordinate meetings with UNU committees, academic affiliates, and advisory boards, including organizing annual stakeholder and partner review sessions.

Please note that this position is funded through June 30, 2027, with the possibility of reappointment should funding be extended.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and six years’ related experience required.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in engineering, sustainability, international relations, environmental science, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated experience in senior academic administration and/or international partnership development.

  • Proven track record of successful grant acquisition and leadership of interdisciplinary or global projects.

  • Strong commitment to global development, applied policy engagement, and research translation.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Manages program development and operations of a learning resource center.

  • Implements and monitors a comprehensive student support program based on targeted academic resources such as tutoring, remedial and/or other related support services

  • Prepares outcomes assessment to further develop center offerings; sets goals and objectives; and supports strategic plan

  • Creates, implements and delivers seminars, workshops and other programs to meet the needs of students and faculty

  • Collaborates with academic departments and other units to design, execute and improve center offerings

  • Oversees promotional material development and center communications utilizing various media formats

  • Prepares analytical and statistical reports for management

  • Manages professional, instructional and/or clerical staff; may administer department budget

  • May seek additional funding by identifying new revenue sources and grants

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary Range: $98,995 - $121,194. Salary commensurate with education and experience.

CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC‑CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
