Job description

The right candidate will be able to comprehend CBOT futures, market factors, carrying costs, basis levels and freight spreads while having the ability to prioritize in an ever-changing environment. In addition to daily responsibilities, customer service is an essential skill for the Commodities Merchandiser as this position is integral in building long-term relationships and providing an unsurpassed experience to our buyers and sellers. Primary Responsibilities
  1. Maintain the highest standard of customer service through a positive friendly attitude ensuring strong business relationships.
  2. Employ excellent organization and time management skills and effectively prioritize responsibilities.
  3. High level of detail orientation in documentation, data entry, and communication.
  4. Work independently with minimal supervision while exercising good judgement, professional conduct and maintaining confidentiality on business matters.
  5. Analyzing and communicating market conditions that affect pricing and/or availability of commodities.
  6. Timely coordination of receipts and deliveries to properly manage customer requests/needs.
  7. Knowledge and ability to interpret contracts for SDSP commodities
  8. Assist in maintaining plant margins and minimizing risks through an understanding of crush margins, hedging, and market spreads
  9. Proficiently utilize multiple computer programs to maintain purchases, sales, futures, transportation, freight variances, and daily position reports.
  10. Managing freight and freight spreads to ensure product moves from origin to destination in a quick, safe, and cost-effective manner.
  11. Comply with SDSP's Safe Quality Food (SQF) food safety program and polices.
  12. Perform duties outside normal responsibilities as needed to support the team and overall organizational goals.

Requirements
Basic Qualifications
  • Degree in Agriculture/Business/related field or equivalent experience.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and ability to learn new programs.
  • Effectively communicate at a professional level.

Work Environment
  • This position is primarily indoors in an office environment.
  • The Commercial team works in an open pod (connected desks) without walls or dividers.
  • Physical requirements include, sitting for long periods, frequently standing and walking.
  • Occasional travel for meetings, presentations, etc. along with some rare evening or weekend work
